Mendon Twin Drive-In
The Mendon Twin Drive-In is a drive-in theater in Mendon, Massachusetts. Opened on June 14, 1954, it is currently owned by Dan Andelman Daniel Jacob Andelman (born May 8, 1975), known as Dan, is one of the hosts of the WSBK-TV 38 show '' The Phantom Gourmet'' and had been hosts of the WTKK Radio 96 radio show ''Phantom Gourmet''. The Andelman brothers took over the ''Phantom Gour ... and his brothers Dave Andelman and Michael, who purchased the drive-in in March 2014 from Susan Swanson and Kathy Gorman, who had operated it since 1986. It can accommodate 800 cars. The second screen was added in 1998. Both screens broadcast movie soundtracks using FM radio signals; there are no remaining metal audio speakers on the poles. As of 2015, it was one of three remaining drive-Ins in Massachusetts. The Andelmans have added a 5,000-square-foot outdoor patio where they offer beer and wine. A drive-in theater or drive-in cinema is a form of cinema structure consisting of a large outdoor movie screen, a projection booth, a concession stand, and a large parking area for automobiles. Within this enclosed area, customers can view movies from the privacy and comfort of their cars. Some drive-ins have small playgrounds for children and a few picnic tables or benches. The screen can be as simple as a painted white wall, or it can be a steel truss structure with a complex finish. Originally, the movie's sound was provided by speakers on the screen and later by individual speakers hung from the window of each car, which was attached to a small pole by a wire. Mendon is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,228 at the 2020 census. Mendon is part of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, an early center of the industrial revolution in the United States. Mendon celebrated its 350th Anniversary on May 15, 2017. History Early history Native Americans inhabited the Mendon area for thousands of years prior to European colonization of the Americas. At the time of contact, Nipmuc people inhabited the area that would become Mendon, and Nipmuc Pond is named for them. Nipmuc Regional High School was named after this lake. ''Nipmuc'' means "small pond place" or "people of the fresh waters". The Nipmuc name does not refer to a specific village or tribe, but to natives that inhabited almost all of central Massachusetts. A drive-in is a facility (such as a restaurant or movie theater) where one can drive in with an automobile for service. At a drive-in restaurant, for example, customers park their vehicles and are usually served by staff who walk or rollerskate out to take orders and return with food, encouraging diners to remain parked while they eat. Drive-in theaters have a large screen and a car parking area for film-goers. It is usually distinguished from a drive-through, in which drivers line up to make an order at a microphone set up at window height, and then drive to a window where they pay and receive their food. The drivers then take their meals elsewhere to eat.
