Menasha () is a city in Winnebago and Calumet counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 18,268 at the 2020 census. Of this, 15,144 were in Winnebago County, and 2,209 were in Calumet County. The city's name comes from the Winnebago word meaning "thorn" or "island". In the Menominee language, it is known as ''Menāēhsaeh'', meaning "little island". It is part of the Fox Cities region of Wisconsin. Doty Island is located partially in Menasha, which it shares with Neenah. Menasha's location on the Fox River and Lake Winnebago led to its rich history, dating back to the inhabitation by Native American tribes for centuries. European settlement in the 1800s led to the development of Menasha as a transportation hub and later a center for paper production and wooden ware products. Curtis Reed (politician)
Curtis Reed (March 24, 1815 – March 18, 1895) was an American businessman, Democratic politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He is considered the founder of Menasha, Wisconsin, and was the first village president after its incorporation in 1853, he subsequently served as the 8th mayor of Menasha after it became a city. He also served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, in 1853 and 1861. Most of Reed's siblings were also notable politicians or married to notable politicians. His brothers were George B. Reed, Orson Reed, and Harrison Reed. His youngest sister was Martha Reed Mitchell. Early life Curtis Reed was born on March 24, 1815, in Westford, Massachusetts. Lake Winnebago
Lake Winnebago (, , ) is a shallow freshwater lake in the north central United States, located in east central Wisconsin. At , it is the largest lake entirely within the state, covering an area of about by with of shoreline, an average depth of , and a maximum depth of . It has many shallow reefs along the west shore and a drop-off type shoreline on the east. There are several islands along the west shore. The lake has two primary tributaries, the Wolf and Fox Rivers, which combine at Lake Butte des Morts. The Fox River flows east through Oshkosh and into Lake Winnebago at its west central shore, then flows out at the northwest shore, around Doty Island at Neenah- Menasha to Little Lake Butte des Morts. James Duane Doty
James Duane Doty (November 5, 1799 – June 13, 1865) was an American land speculator, politician, and pioneer. He served as the 2nd Governor of Wisconsin, governor (1841–1844) of the Wisconsin Territory and 5th Governor of Utah, governor (1863–1865) of the Utah Territory, and played a significant role in the early development of both territories. He also served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Wisconsin's 3rd congressional district from 1849 to 1853. He was a member of the Lewis Cass expedition in 1820, which made the first American surveys of the territory now comprising the state of Wisconsin, and was then appointed federal district judge over that region. Doty Island is an island in Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Its northern part is in the city of Menasha and its southern part is in the city of Neenah. Banta Corporation was a major printing, imaging, and supply chain management company of the United States, based in Menasha, Wisconsin, for all of its 105 years.
