Memorial Stadium (Waycross)
Memorial Stadium is a 12,000-capacity county-owned stadium located in Waycross, Georgia, the largest city in and county seat of Ware County, Georgia, Ware County in the southern part of the state. Noted for its J-shaped main stand, Memorial Stadium was originally intended as a multi-use venue that would be home to both baseball and American football, football in Ware County. During the 1950s and 1960s the stadium played host to a duo of Georgia–Florida League teams, the Bears and the Braves in addition to hosting high school football in the autumn. In 2002 the stadium was renovated and became a venue exclusively for sports played on rectangular fields (chiefly football, though soccer is also played at the venue occasionally) with the addition of a new stand running along the northern sideline. Waycross, Georgia
Waycross is the county seat of and only incorporated city in Ware County in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 13,942 in the 2020 census. Waycross gets its name from the city's location at key railroad junctions; lines from six directions meet at the city. History Waycross includes two historic districts ( Downtown Waycross Historic District and Waycross Historic District) and several other properties that are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, Lott Cemetery, the First African Baptist Church and Parsonage, and the Obediah Barber Homestead (which is seven miles south of the city). The area now known as Waycross was first settled ''circa'' 1820, locally known as "Old Nine" or "Number Nine" and then Pendleton. The Georgia–Florida League was a minor baseball league that existed from 1935 through 1958 (suspending operations during World War II) and in 1962–1963. It was one of many Class D circuits that played in the Southeastern United States during the postwar period—a group that included the Georgia State League, Georgia–Alabama League, Florida State League, and the Alabama–Florida League, Alabama State League.
