Melvin Sykes
Melvin Elijah Sykes (January 10, 1901 – March, 1984) was an American Negro league outfielder in 1926. A native of Decatur, Alabama, Sykes was the brother of fellow Negro leaguer Doc Sykes. Younger brother Melvin attended Morehouse College, where he was captain of the baseball and basketball teams, and graduated in 1926. His Negro league career was limited to a single season, 1926, when he split time between the Hilldale Club and the Lincoln Giants. The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans. Hilldale Club
The Hilldale Athletic Club (informally known as Darby Daisies) were an American professional Negro league baseball team based in Darby, Pennsylvania, west of Philadelphia. Established as a boys team in 1910, the Hilldales were developed by their early manager, then owner Ed Bolden to be one of the powerhouse Negro league baseball teams. They won the first three Eastern Colored League pennants beginning in 1923 and in 1925 won the second Colored World Series. Hall of Fame player Judy Johnson was a Hilldale regular for most its professional era with 12 seasons in 15 years (1918–1932). Pitcher Phil Cockrell played for Hilldale throughout those years. Lincoln Giants
The New York Lincoln Giants were a Negro league baseball team based in New York City from 1911 through 1930. Founding The Lincoln Giants can trace their origins back to the Nebraska Indians, of Lincoln, Nebraska, from the 1890s. According to Sol White's ''History of Colored Base Ball,'' in 1890, the Lincoln Giants were founded as the first colored professional team in the west. In the early 1910s, Jess McMahon, a white promoter, hired Sol White, former manager of the Philadelphia Giants, to put together a club. Doc Sykes
Frank Jehoy Sykes (April 10, 1892 – November 10, 1986), nicknamed "Doc", was an American Negro league pitcher in the 1910s and 1920s. A native of Decatur, Alabama, Sykes was the brother of fellow Negro leaguer Melvin Sykes. He attended Atlanta Baptist College and Howard University College of Medicine. He broke into professional baseball in 1914 with the Brooklyn Royal Giants, but his longest tenure was with the Baltimore Black Sox in the early 1920s. In 1922, Sykes tossed a no-hitter for Baltimore against the Bacharach Giants at Maryland Baseball Park. After his baseball career, Sykes returned to Decatur to practice dentistry. While living in Decatur in 1931, he provided critical testimony in the Scottsboro Boys trial, challenging the fairness of an all-white jury in the case. The Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC) is an African-American political league, co-founded by Orzell Billingsley and others, in cooperation with the national Democratic Party. Formed in 1960 as the Black Political Caucus of Alabama, it was the first statewide political organization in Alabama for African Americans, and was designed in an effort to bring newly registered blacks into the Democratic ranks.
