Melrose (Murfreesboro, North Carolina)
Melrose is a historic home located in the Murfreesboro Historic District at Murfreesboro, Hertford County, North Carolina. It was built about 1805, as a two-story, Federal-style brick dwelling with a gable roof and interior end chimneys. Two-story, two-bay, Greek Revival-style wings were added in the mid-19th century. It is seven bays wide and features a tetrastyle portico supported by Ionic order columns and a Second story semi-circular balcony. It was built by Congressman William H. Murfree (1781 – 1827), son of Hardy Murfree (1752 – 1809). Murfreesboro Historic District is a national historic district located at Murfreesboro, Hertford County, North Carolina. The district encompasses nine contributing buildings in the oldest section of the city of Murfreesboro. The buildings include notable examples of Greek Revival style architecture. They are the William Rea Store (c. 1790); John Wheeler House (c. 1800) birthplace of John H. Wheeler (1806-1882) and later home of Congressman Jesse Johnson Yeates (1829-1892); Myrick House (c. 1810); Melrose (c. 1810) home of Congressman William H. Murfreesboro is a town in Hertford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,835 at the 2010 census. The town is home to Chowan University. Geography Murfreesboro is located in northwestern Hertford County on high ground south of the Meherrin River. U.S. Route 258 runs through the eastern end of the town, and U.S. Route 158 bypasses the town to the south. US-258 leads southwest to Tarboro and northeast to Franklin, Virginia, while US-158 leads east to Winton, the Hertford county seat, and west to Roanoke Rapids. Hardy Murfree (June 5, 1752 – April 6, 1809) was an American soldier who served as a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He is the namesake of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Early life Murfree was born on June 5, 1752, at Murfree's Landing, in the British colony of North Carolina, later renamed Murfreesboro. His parents were William Murfree and Mary Moore. Military career Murfree, a lieutenant in the Hertford County militia when the Revolutionary War began, was commissioned on September 1, 1775, as a captain in the 2nd North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Army. The regiment was commanded by Colonel Robert Howe, who was later a major general. Murfree saw action at the Battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778, and achieved his greatest renown for leading a successful diversionary attack against British defenses in the Battle of Stony Point on July 15, 1779.
