Mellcene Thurman Smith
Mellcene Thurman Smith (November 13, 1871 – June 21, 1957) was one of the first women elected to the Missouri House of Representatives. Early life and education Smith was born to John William and Cecelia Marion Thurman in Buchanan County, Missouri. She went to school in St. Joseph and Kansas City. Smith intended to have a career on-stage as a lyric soprano and studied voice. She married Edward T. Smith of St. Louis, where she moved and worked with him as secretary-treasurer at the family-owned St. Louis Law Print Company. She participated in a number of civic, historical, and political organizations, including the League of Women Voters as president of the University City League, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Women's Democratic State Committee, Daughters of the American Colonists, and U.S. Daughters of 1812. Buchanan County, Missouri
Buchanan County is located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 84,793. Its county seat is St. Joseph. When originally formed in 1838, the county was named Roberts County, after settler Hiram Roberts. It was renamed in 1839 for James Buchanan, then a U.S. Senator and later President of the United States. The county was formed from land annexed to Missouri, as were five other counties. Sarah Lucille Turner
Sarah Lucille Turner, later known as Sarah Turner Jepson (March 28, 1898 – April 12, 1972), was a Missouri lawyer and politician who later went on to a career at ''Newsweek''. With Mellcene Thurman Smith, she was one of the first two women elected to the Missouri General Assembly, although Smith joked that she was first woman representative because representatives were sworn in by alphabetical order. Life and career Turner was a native of Centralia, Illinois, who moved with her family to Kansas City, Missouri, when she was ten. A 1915 honors graduate of Northeast High School, she took a job during the day for Havens Structural Steel Company and took night classes at the Kansas City School of Law she graduated in 1922 and began work with the law firm of Hagerman & Jost. The Missouri Senate is the upper chamber of the Missouri General Assembly. It has 34 members, representing districts with an average population of 174,000. Its members serve four-year terms, with half the seats being up for election every two years. Mary L. Jones Gant (born July 14, 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American politician who became the first woman elected to the Missouri Senate. In 1972, after three terms in the Missouri House, she was elected to the state senate with over 70% of the vote. Although she belonged to the Democratic Party, she was against the Equal Rights Amendment and later endorsed Republican Kit Bond for Governor of Missouri over the Democratic incumbent Joseph P. Teasdale. She lost re-election to Lee Swinton Missouri's first African-American state senator from the Kansas City Area. In 1981, Governor Bond appointed her as chair of the State Board of Mediation.
