Meliskerke
Meliskerke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Veere, and lies about 8 km west of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1235 as "Hughenkerke que modo Meliskercke dicitur", and means "(private) church of Meinlof (person)". Meliskerke is an incomplete circular church village which developed in the 12th century on a ridge. The Dutch Reformed church is a single-aisled church. The tower date dates from around 1400. The church was modified and partially rebuilt after damage between 1572 and 1574. The tower is leaning slightly and has a displacement of 60 centimetres. The grist mill Meliskerke Molen was built in 1801. It was in use until 1954. In 1987, it was bought by the municipality and restored. It is usually in operation on Saturdays. Franca Treur
Franca Treur (born 1979) is a Dutch writer and a freelance journalist for ''NRC Handelsblad'' and ''nrc.next''. Biography Youth and education Treur grew up in a strict Reformed Christian farming family in her Zeelandic birthplace of Meliskerke. After secondary school at the Calvijn College, she went on to study psychology at Leiden University. Later she switched to Dutch language and literary science. In Leiden, she became a member of the Reformed student association Panoplia. According to a newspaper interview, during her studies she discovered the similarities between stories from Ancient Near Eastern cultures and those related in the Bible, which convinced her that such stories were merely invented to console human beings. Moreover, she says that she had never felt the existence of God, and therefore abandoned her faith, informing the board of Panoplia about it on 11 September 2001. Veere (municipality)
Veere (; zea, label=Zeelandic, Ter Veere) is a municipality with a population of 22,000 and a town with a population of 1,500 in the southwestern Netherlands, in the region of Walcheren in the province of Zeeland. History The name ''Veere'' means "ferry": Wolfert Van Borssele established a ferry and ferry house there in 1281. Mariekerke, Netherlands
Mariekerke is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Bible Belt (Netherlands)
The Bible Belt ( nl, bijbelgordel, biblebelt ) is a strip of land in the Netherlands with the highest concentration of conservative orthodox Calvinist Protestants in the country. Although the term is recent (named after the Bible Belt of the United States) the Dutch Bible belt has existed for many generations. This Bible Belt stretches from Zeeland in the southwest, through the West-Betuwe and Veluwe in the center of the country, to parts of the province Overijssel in the northeast. Municipalities in this area include Yerseke, Tholen, Ouddorp, Opheusden, Kesteren, Barneveld, Nunspeet, Elspeet and Staphorst. The three biggest cities regarded to be part of the Bible Belt are Ede, Veenendaal and Kampen.
