Meldon Railway Station
Meldon railway station was a stone built railway station with goods sidings in Northumberland on the Wansbeck Railway between Morpeth and Reedsmouth to the south of the village of Meldon. History In 1859 Parliament authorised the Wansbeck Railway Company to build the line from to . Due to financial difficulties the line was built in stages. In 1862 the line from to Scotsgap opened, with an extension to Knowesgate opening a year later. At this time the Wansbeck Railway Company amalgamates with the North British Railway. It was only on 1 May 1865 that the line was completed. Wansbeck Railway
The Wansbeck Railway was a single track railway line in Northumberland, England, that ran from Morpeth to Reedsmouth, where it made a junction with the Border Counties Railway. Conceived as part of a through trunk route for the North British Railway, it never achieved its potential. It opened in stages from 1862 to 1865. The population was sparse and mineral traffic kept the line going. In 1870, the Rothbury branch opened, from a junction on the Wansbeck line at Scotsgap. North British Railway
The North British Railway was a British railway company, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1844, with the intention of linking with English railways at Berwick. The line opened in 1846, and from the outset the company followed a policy of expanding its geographical area, and competing with the Caledonian Railway in particular. In doing so it committed huge sums of money, and incurred shareholder disapproval that resulted in two chairmen leaving the company. Nonetheless the company successfully reached Carlisle, where it later made a partnership with the Midland Railway. It also linked from Edinburgh to Perth and Dundee, but for many years the journey involved a ferry crossing of the Forth and the Tay. The North Eastern Region was a region of British Railways from 1948, whose operating area could be identified by the orange signs and colour schemes that adorned its stations and other railway buildings. It was merged with the Eastern Region in 1967. It was the near direct post- nationalisation descendant of the North Eastern Railway, that had merged with some other companies to form the LNER in 1923. In 1958 in a major re-drawing of the region boundaries it gained those former LMS lines that lay in the present-day West and North Yorkshire. Morpeth is a railway station on the East Coast Main Line, which runs between and . The station, situated north of Newcastle, serves the market town of Morpeth, Northumberland, England. Reedsmouth Railway Station
Reedsmouth is a closed railway station in Northumberland, England. It was a junction station where the Wansbeck Railway (Morpeth to Reedsmouth) joined the Border Counties Railway (Hexham to Riccarton Junction). It served the village of Redesmouth, which is spelled differently. The station was opened in November 1864. It was closed to passengers in October 1956, but remained open for goods trains and public excursions until November 11, 1963. Today, the station can be visited on foot by going into the hamlet of Redesmouth, through the kissing gate and following the footpath signs towards Countess Park.
