Mel Leavitt (né Mahlon Tirre Leavitt) was a local historian and broadcast journalist that served the New Orleans, Louisiana, market from 1949 until near the time of his death in 1997 at age 70. WGNO (channel 26) is a television station in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, affiliated with American Broadcasting Company, ABC. It is owned by Nexstar Media Group alongside WNOL-TV (channel 38), an owned-and-operated station of The CW. The two stations share studios at The Galleria (Metairie, Louisiana), The Galleria in Metairie; WGNO's transmitter is located in Chalmette, Louisiana.
