Mekko
''Mekko'' is a 2015 American drama film directed by Sterlin Harjo. Harjo's third feature film, it is a thriller set among a community of homeless Native Americans in Tulsa. Plot Mekko leaves prison, having served a long sentence for having killed his cousin in a brawl. He reflects on his family's knowing and the path that he strayed from, where he was considered a seer by the old people. He is haunted by visions of his own death and his ultimate fight with an evil spirit witch that takes the form of warriors or animal spirits. He knows he must confront it, but he fears his own weakness. Mekko meets a fellow Native American who says he is a warrior, but who actually preys on the weak while demanding respect. Mekko looks into the man's heart and sees that it is the dwelling place of a witch who has killed many times. Inevitably, a confrontation arises. Rod Rondeaux
Rod Rondeaux is a Native American actor and stuntman. As an actor, his work includes the 2005 miniseries '' Into the West'', ''Comanche Moon'' in 2008, the Cayuse character in the 2010 Kelly Reichardt film '' Meek's Cutoff'' (in which he co-starred with Bruce Greenwood, Shirley Henderson, Will Patton, Paul Dano, and Michelle Williams), and the lead role in the 2015 film, ''Mekko''. His stunt work includes ''Reel Injun'' and ''Comanche Moon''. Background Rondeaux is a citizen of the Crow Tribe and is also of Cheyenne descent. He grew up on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. For years, Rondeaux was on the rodeo circuit as a horse rider, bull rider, steer wrestler and team roper. His entry into film stunt work was accidental. ''On the Bowery'' is a 1956 American docufiction film directed by Lionel Rogosin. The film, Rogosin's first feature was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film. After the Second World War, Lionel Rogosin made a vow to fight fascism and racism wherever he found it. In 1954, he left the family business, the Beaunit Mills-American Rayon Corporation, in order to make films in accordance with his ideals. As he needed experience, he looked around for a subject and was struck by the plight of the men on the Bowery, and he determined that a portrayal of their daily lives on the streets and in the bars of the New York City neighborhood would make a strong film. Thus, ''On the Bowery'' served as Rogosin's practice film for the subsequent filming of his anti-apartheid film '' Come Back, Africa'' (1960). ''The Exiles'' is a 1961 film by Kent MacKenzie chronicling a day in the life of a group of 20-something Native Americans who left reservation life in the 1950s to live in the district of Bunker Hill, Los Angeles, California. Kialegee Tribal Town
The Kialegee Tribal Town is a federally recognized Native American tribe in Oklahoma, as well as a traditional township within the former Muscogee Creek Confederacy in the American Southeast. Tribal members pride themselves on retaining their traditions and many still speak the Muscogee language. The name "Kialegee" comes from the Muscogee word, ''eka-lache'', meaning "head left." 2015 Toronto International Film Festival
The 40th annual Toronto International Film Festival was held from 10 to 20 September 2015. On 28 July 2015 the first wave of films to be screened at the Festival was announced.
