Mehdili, Jabrayil
Mehdili is a village in the Jabrayil Rayon of Azerbaijan. The village was captured by Armenian forces in the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. On October 3, 2020, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence announced that the Azerbaijani Army had taken control of the village. History During the years of the Russian Empire, the village of Mekhtilu was part of Jabrayil district, Elizavetpol province. According to the “Code of statistical data of the Transcaucasian region population, extracted from the family lists of 1886”, in the village of Mehtilu of the Marjanly rural society there were 69 dym where lived 306 Azerbaijanis (listed as “Tatars”), who were Sunni by religion and peasants. Jabrayil Rayon
Jabrayil District () is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the south-west of the country and belongs to the East Zangezur Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Khojavend, Fuzuli, Qubadli, Zangilan, and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Its capital is Jabrayil, however since the city is completely ruined following its occupation by ethnic Armenian forces, the current '' de facto'' capital is Jojug Marjanly until Jabrayil is rebuilt. As of 2020, the district had a nominal population of 81,700. Etymology The name of Jabrayil was taken from the name of the village Jabrayil that was the centre of the region. First Nagorno-Karabakh War
The First Nagorno-Karabakh War was an ethnic conflict, ethnic and territorial conflict that took place from February 1988 to May 1994, in the enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in southwestern Azerbaijan, between the majority ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh backed by Armenia, and the Republic of Azerbaijan with support from Turkey. The Azerbaijani Armed Forces () is the military of the Azerbaijan, Republic of Azerbaijan. It was re-established according to the country's Law of the Armed Forces on 9 October 1991.
