Megahertz Stakes
The Megahertz Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares that are four years old or older, over a distance of 1 mile on the turf held annually in January at Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, California. The event currently carries a purse of $100,000. History The race was inaugurated in 2011 and the event was run over the 1 mile distance. The event is named in honor of the British mare Megahertz (GB) who was trained by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame trainer Robert J. Frankel. Megahertz won two Grade I events including the 2005 Yellow Ribbon Stakes which was run at Santa Anita Park and the GII Santa Barbara Handicap twice (2003–2004). In 2016 the event was upgraded to a Grade III event. Santa Anita Park is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, United States. It offers some of the prominent horse racing events in the United States during early fall, winter and in spring. Santa Barbara Handicap
The Santa Barbara Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually in mid April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. A Grade III event open to fillies and mares, age four and older, it is contested of turf over a distance of one and a half miles. Inaugurated in 1935, through 1941 it was a race for two-year-olds. In 1952 and again in 1954 it was restricted to three-year-old California-foaled fillies and in 1953 for three-year-old California foals of either sex. From 1955 through 1965, it was open to horses age three-year-olds and up and then since 1966 for fillies and mares age four and older. The race was known as the Santa Barbara Juvenile Championship in 1937 and then as the Santa Barbara Stakes in 1935 and 1936, 1938, 1941, 1946 and 1952 through 1954. Jerry Hollendorfer (born June 18, 1946, in Akron, Ohio) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer whose notable horses include Eclipse Award winners Blind Luck, Shared Belief and Songbird. He has the most wins in the history of Northern California race horse trainers. In 2011, he was inducted into the US Racing Hall of Fame. Background Hollendorfer grew up on the outskirts of Akron, Ohio, in a rural area, ( Bath Township), where he had a pony to ride. Victor Espinoza (born May 23, 1972) is a Mexican jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing who won the Triple Crown in 2015 on American Pharoah. He began riding in his native Mexico and went on to compete at racetracks in California.
