Mega-journal
A mega journal (also mega-journal and megajournal) is a peer-reviewed academic open access journal designed to be much larger than a traditional journal by exercising low selectivity among accepted articles. It was pioneered by '' PLOS ONE''. This "very lucrative publishing model" was soon emulated by other publishers. Definition A mega journal has the following defining characteristics: * broad coverage of different subject areas; * accepting articles for publication based on whether they are technically sound rather than selecting for perceived importance; and * using article processing charges to cover the costs of publishing, although it is also possible for a mega journal to function as a non-profit (one example is ''Open Library of Humanities''). ''Heliyon'' is a monthly peer-reviewed open-access mega journal covering research in science, medicine and engineering. Unlike most of its competitors, the journal will consider for publication works reporting negative/null results, incremental advances, and replication studies, thus filling the market niche, which became vacant after the discontinuation of the '' Journal of Negative Results in Biomedicine'' in 2017. ''Heliyon'' was established in 2015 by Cell Press, a division of Elsevier. According to the publisher's website: "the ournal'sname is all about shining light on important research. Open access (OA) is a set of principles and a range of practices through which nominally copyrightable publications are delivered to readers free of access charges or other barriers. Open Library Of Humanities
The Open Library of Humanities is a nonprofit, diamond open access publisher in the humanities and social sciences founded by Martin Paul Eve and Caroline Edwards. Founded in 2015, OLH published 27 scholarly journals as of 2022, and as of 2025 lists 33 journals, including a mega journal, also called Open Library of Humanities, which was modeled on PLOS but not affiliated with it. History The Open Library of Humanities was officially launched on 28 September 2015. The project was funded by core grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and uses a library partnership subsidy model to cover costs. ''Scientific Reports'' is a peer-reviewed open-access scientific mega journal published by Nature Portfolio, covering all areas of the natural sciences. The journal was established in 2011. The journal states that their aim is to assess solely the scientific validity of a submitted paper, rather than its perceived importance, significance, or impact. In September 2016, the journal became the largest in the world by number of articles, overtaking '' PLOS ONE''. IEEE Access is a peer-reviewed open-access scientific journal published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It was established in 2013 and covers all IEEE fields of interest. The founding editor-in-chief was Michael Pecht (University of Maryland) and the current editor-in-chief is Derek Abbott ( University of Adelaide). The journal won a PROSE Award in 2015 for the best new journal in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
