Meg Downie (born 3 January 1989) is a retired Australian rules footballer who played for the Melbourne Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW) competition. AFLW career Downie was recruited by Melbourne as a free agent in October 2016. She made her debut in the 15 point loss to at Casey Fields in the opening round of the 2017 season. Victorian Women's Football League
The Victorian Women's Football League (VWFL) was the oldest and largest Australian rules football league for women in the world, consisting of 47 clubs from Victoria, Australia, across seven divisions and a total of over 1,000 players. Sophie Casey (born 22 October 1991) is an Australian rules footballer playing for the Collingwood Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). Early life and state football Born in Holbrook, New South Wales, Casey was introduced to footy with Auskick. She played for three years with Riverina Lions in the Canberra League, while attending university in Wagga Wagga. She then joined VFLW club, Eastern Devils. 2016 AFL Women's Draft
The 2016 AFL Women's draft consisted of the various periods when the eight clubs in the AFL Women's competition recruited players prior to the competition's inaugural season in 2017. Draftees and signings over the period were required to have a minimum age qualification of 18. Prior to the draft itself each club was allowed to sign two marquee players from any state across the country at an increased salary. In addition, they were permitted to sign a number of priority players with existing connections to the club, and up to two rookie players who had not played competitive Australian rules football within the previous three years.
