Spiegel was an United States of America, American direct marketing retailer founded in 1865 by Joseph Spiegel. Spiegel published a catalog, like its competitors Sears, Aldens, and Montgomery Ward, which advertised various brands of apparel, accessories, and footwear, as well as housewares, toys, tools, firearms, and electronics. Their house brand, company brands included Newport News, Shape FX, and Old Kraftsman, among others. They also operated brick-and-mortar stores. Spiegel delivered its first mail order catalog in 1905 and by 1925, the retailer had 10 million customers. Spiegel's buyers, who went to Paris fashion shows, introduced American women to European fashion Fad, trends. Anthony McKinney
Anthony McKinney was a prisoner convicted of killing a security guard in 1978 in Harvey, Illinois. He was the subject of a Medill Innocence Project effort to reinvestigate his case and determine if he was wrongfully convicted. The case obtained notoriety after the Cook County state's attorney subpoenaed the Medill School of Journalism students' grades, class syllabus, and personal e-mails. Alstory Simon
Anthony Porter (December 14, 1954 – July 5, 2021) was a Chicago resident convicted and sentenced to death in 1983 for the murder of two teenagers on the South Side of the city. He served 17 years on death row before was exonerated in 1999 after new evidence was uncovererd by Northwestern University professors and students from the Medill School of Journalism as part of their investigation for the school's Innocence Project. Porter had already made multiple appeals that were rejected, including by the US Supreme Court, and he was once 50 hours away from execution when another suspect was identified and confessed, in a process now considered highly controversial. In 1999 the Medill Innocence Project identified Alstory Simon as the perpetrator of the murders. Simon, who was living in Chicago in the 1980s but had since returned to Milwaukee, confessed to the crime on videotape. The Ford Heights Four
The Ford Heights Four (Verneal Jimerson, Dennis Williams, Kenneth Adams, and Willie Rainge) were formerly imprisoned convicts, who were falsely accused and convicted of the double murder of Lawrence Lionberg and Carol Schmal in Ford Heights, Illinois, and later exonerated. Jimerson and Williams were sentenced to death, Adams to 75 years in prison and Rainge to life. Following the murder in 1978, the four spent almost two decades in prison before being released in 1996. This miscarriage of justice was due to false forensic testimony, coercion of a prosecution witness, perjury by another witness who had an incentive to lie, and prosecution and police misconduct.
