Mecklenburg County Council is a Scouting America council serving Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The council was founded in 1915 and its offices are located in Charlotte. History Charlotte Council (#415) was founded in 1940, changing its name to Mecklenburg County Council (#415) in 1942. Organization The council is divided geographically into three districts: * Apache District: Southwestern Mecklenburg County * Etowah District: Southeastern Mecklenburg County * Hornets Nest District: Northern Mecklenburg County Camps It operates two camp facilities, Belk Scout Camp (Formerly Clear Creek Scout Camp) in Midland, North Carolina, and Camp Grimes at Mecklenburg Scout Reservation, outside of the council borders near Marion, North Carolina. Scouting America
Scouting America is the largest scouting organization and one of the largest List of youth organizations, youth organizations in the United States, with over 1 million youth, including nearly 200,000 female participants. Midland is a town in southern Cabarrus County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. Located in the Charlotte region of North Carolina, Midland is a 30-minute commute to uptown Charlotte. The name of the town is derived from its location approximately halfway between Charlotte and Oakboro on the railroad line. The population was 4,684 as of the 2020 census, up from 3,073 in 2010. Order Of The Arrow
The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the honor society of Scouting America, composed of Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Promise, Scout Oath and Scout Law, Law in their daily lives as elected by their peers. It was founded as a camp fraternity by E. Urner Goodman, with the assistance of Carroll A. Edson, in 1915. Although it began without national approval, it was eventually admitted as an "Official Experiment" of Scouting America. In 1948, following an extensive review, it became a program of the organization. Inducted members, known as ''Arrowmen'' or ''Brothers'' (regardless of gender; as Scouting America and its programs are open to all genders), are organized into local youth-led lodges that harbor fellowship, promote camping, and render service to scout councils and their communities.
