Aaron Funk (born January 11, 1975), known as Venetian Snares, is a Canadian electronic musician based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He is widely known for innovating and popularising the breakcore genre, and is one of the most recognisable artists to be signed to Planet Mu, an experimental electronic music label. His signature style involves meticulously complex drums, eclectic use of Sampling (music), samples, and unusual time signatures, odd time signatures, in particular, . His 2005 release ''Rossz Csillag Alatt Született'' combined breakbeats with orchestral samples, and was released to critical acclaim, helping bring the artist and genre into popularity within the experimental electronic music community. ''Rossz Csillag Alatt Született'' () is the twelfth studio album by Canadian electronic music producer Venetian Snares, released on the Planet Mu label on 2005. Inspired by a visit to Hungary, the album title and all of the track names are in Hungarian language, Hungarian; translates to "Born Under The Wrong Star", or figuratively, "Cursed From Birth". The album consists of classical strings and brass combined with breakbeats. Overview The concept of the album came when Aaron Funk imagined himself as a pigeon on Budapest's Buda Castle, Királyi Palota (Royal Palace). Its third track, "Öngyilkos Vasárnap" is a Cover song, cover of the song "Szomorú Vasárnap" ("Gloomy Sunday") by Hungarian composer Rezső Seress, which has been referred to as the Hungarian suicide song. Breakcore
Breakcore is a style of electronic dance music that emerged from jungle, hardcore, and drum and bass in the mid-to-late 1990s. It is characterized by very complex and intricate breakbeats and a wide palette of sampling sources played at high tempos. History As the early days of "hardcore techno" or just "hardcore" began to settle in Europe, breakcore as a genre began to take more concrete forms in other parts of the world. Inspired by new labels such as Addict, from Milwaukee, US; Peace Off from Rennes, France; Sonic Belligeranza from Bologna, Italy; and Planet Mu, from London, it began to take a new shape, adding in more elements of mashup and IDM to the hardcore sounds. ''Greg Hates Car Culture'' is a breakcore EP released by Venetian Snares in 1999 on Minneapolis-based label History of the Future. It was his first official release and led to him being signed by Planet Mu. Twenty years later, a re-mastered version was re-released with three extra tracks on Timesig, a sublabel of Planet Mu as the twenty-fourth studio album of Venetian Snares. The tracks were originally made using an Amiga 500 and an effects pedal. Background Venetian Snares (real name Aaron Funk) grew up in Winnipeg, Canada. He started making music as a child and bought an Amiga 500 in 1992. The ''Greg Hates Car Culture'' EP was his first record, released by Minneapolis label History of the Future in 1999. Funk made the album mostly when improvising whilst using his Amiga 500 as a sampler feeding into an effects pedal and recording to DAT. At the time he was working as a delivery driver for a bakery. OctaMED
OctaMED is a music tracker for the Amiga, written by Teijo Kinnunen. The first version, 1.12, was released in 1989 under the name MED, which stands for Music EDitor. In April 1990, version 2.00 was released with MIDI support as the main improvement. In 1991 the first version with the name OctaMED was released, so-called as it could replay eight independent channels on the Amiga's four-channel sound chip. This was also the first commercial version of the software. The publisher had previously been RBF Software of Southampton, UK which was run by Ray Burt-Frost.
