McTavish Reservoir
The McTavish reservoir (french: Réservoir McTavish), named for Simon McTavish, is an underground reservoir and park located within McGill University's campus on the southern slope of Mount Royal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It holds 37 million gallons of water and is supplied by its large Château Style pump-houses located in the south-eastern corner of the park. Atop the reservoir is Rutherford Park. It also is the location of the McTavish automated weather reporting station (CWTA, 71612). History The city of Montreal decided to construct the reservoir in 1852, after a devastating fire that destroyed almost half the houses in the city. The fire had broken out while the previous reservoir, located at what is now Saint-Louis Square, was closed for repairs. The reservoir was constructed between 1852 and 1856 and uses the natural rock of the site to hold water, with some masonry on the south of the reservoir. Simon McTavish (1750 – 6 July 1804), of Montreal was a Scottish-born fur trader and the chief founding partner of the North West Company. He was a member of the Beaver Club and was known as the ''Marquis'' for his pre-eminent position in the fur trade and his refined style of living. Both McTavish Street and the McTavish Reservoir in Montreal are named for him. His home and monument in the Golden Square Mile were longstanding landmarks in Montreal. Mason McTavish (born January 30, 2003) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL). McTavish was selected third overall by the Ducks in the first round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Ducks in 2021. Internationally McTavish played for the Canadian national team at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Playing career McTavish played minor ice hockey for the Pembroke Lumber Kings, where he was coached by his father, Dale McTavish, who also owned the team. He was selected fifth overall in the 2019 OHL Draft by the Peterborough Petes, the same junior team his father played for. John McTavish (politician)
John Henry McTavish (June 11, 1837 – March 5, 1888) was an accountant and political figure in Manitoba. He represented Ste. Anne from 1871 to 1874 in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba. He was born in Grafton, Upper Canada and educated in Montreal, Province of Canada. He came to Fort Garry as an apprentice clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1857. McTavish married Maria, the daughter of John Rowand in 1863. He was in charge of Upper Fort Garry after Governor William McTavish (not a relative) left for Scotland in 1870. In 1873, he was a founding member of the Winnipeg Board of Trade. McTavish was named to the Council for the North-West Territories in 1874 but retired from politics to serve as Chief Factor at Fort Garry from 1874 to 1880. In 1881, he became a land commissioner for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Jessie Gordon, formerly McTavish, (born c.1940) is a Scottish retired nurse who was convicted in 1974 of murdering a patient with insulin, and of administering a variety of substances with intent to cause harm. The conviction was overturned on appeal in 1976. She was dubbed the "Angel of Death" by the press. Career McTavish worked in Ward 5 at Glasgow's Ruchill Hospital. Prosecution McTavish was tried in 1974 for the murder of an 80-year-old patient, Elizabeth Lyon and assaulting three other patients by giving them illegal injections. One victim was found after tests to have an inexplicable quantity of pethidine in their system, while the murder victim had been injected with soluble insulin.
