Mazsalaca
Mazsalaca (; , , ) is a town in Valmiera Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. It has 1269 inhabitants. History The area includes the largest known Stone Age burial site in Northern Europe and was first settled ca. 5000 BC. The present town began to develop in 1864, when a bridge over the Salaca river was constructed. During World War II, Mazsalaca was under German occupation from 4 July 1941 until 25 September 1944. It was administered as a part of the Generalbezirk Lettland of Reichskommissariat Ostland. In October 2009 a meteorite crater was found near the town, which later turned out to be hoax as part of marketing campaign of telecommunication company Tele2. Augusts Kirhenšteins
Augusts Kirhenšteins, formerly spelt Kirchenšteins (18 September 1872 – 3 November 1963), was a Latvian and Soviet microbiologist, politician and educator. He was the ''de facto'' prime minister of Latvia from 20 June 1940 to 25 August 1940 and Acting ''de facto'' President of Latvia from 21 July 1940 to 25 August 1940. It was Kirhenšteins' Soviet puppet government that requested the incorporation of Latvia into the Soviet Union after the occupation of the country in 1940. He became a member of the Communist Party in 1941. He was Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic 1940–1952. Biography Augusts Kirhenšteins was born on 18 September 1872 on the estate of Valtenberg Manor in Mazsalaca, in the Governorate of Livonia. Gustavs Ērenpreis
Gustavs Ērenpreis (5 September 1891 – 19 May 1956) was a Latvian manufacturer of bicycles best known as the recipient of the Order of the Three Stars and Cross of Recognition, and as a founder and director of Gustavs Ērenpreis Bicycle Factory, which in the 1930s was the largest manufacturer of bicycles in the Baltic States. Ērenpreis's bicycles were ridden by a generation of elite bicycle racers in Latvia. Personal life Gustavs Ērenpreis was the son of Valtenberģi Manor coachman Lībijs and Anna. He was born in Vatenberģi (today, Mazsalaca), Latvia which at that time was in the Russian Empire. Ērenpreis was educated at a trade school in Riga. Oskars Perro
Oskars Perro (September 26, 1918 – May 2, 2003) was a Latvian soldier and writer. He was the first Latvian to be awarded the German Iron Cross in the Second World War. Biography Oskars Perro was born in Mazsalaca, Latvia on 26 September 1918. He studied medicine at Latvian University. In 1941 his family suffered in the Soviet mass deportations. When Soviet-German War broke out in June 1941, Perro volunteered in the German army. In December 1941, first Latvian units was sent to the Eastern Front. In January 1942, Perro with a small group of Latvian soldiers was trapped near Demyansk pocket, at Kholm. He was wounded twice, but managed to survive until the pocket was liberated in May 1942. For his valour in these battles he was awarded with Iron Cross 2nd Class, thus becoming first Latvian in the Second World War to receive it. Valmiera Municipality () is one of the 35 Municipalities of Latvia, municipalities established in Latvia in 2021, located approximately west of the national capital Riga. 2009 Latvian Meteorite Hoax
The 2009 Latvian meteorite hoax was a publicity stunt in which Swedish-based telecommunications company Tele2 staged an apparent meteorite landing which was later revealed to be fake. The "Meteorite" incident The drama began at around 17:30 local time (15:30 GMT) in Latvia on Sunday 25 October 2009. Student Ancis Steinbergs reported that a fiery meteor-like object had fallen in a field outside the town of Mazsalaca near the Estonian border. Reports described the object lighting up the evening sky with a blazing trail and hitting the ground with a loud crash, leaving a burning crater claimed to be around wide and from up to deep. Fire crews, police and military units attended the site, which was cordoned off while tests were carried out to check radiation levels. Salaca
The Salaca () is a river in northern Latvia. It flows from Lake Burtnieks in Vidzeme, 90 km, to the Gulf of Riga. The river flows through three towns, Mazsalaca, Staicele and Salacgrīva. The riverbanks feature Devonian red sandstone cliffs, and many caves and rapids as well. The river gives its name to a dialect of Livonian language, Livonian (Salaca Livonian) spoken on its upper banks into the 19th century, which is today extinct. Catchment and hydrology The Salaca River basin is the fifth largest in Latvia, covering 3,421 km2 in the north-east of the country, of which 62 per cent lies within Lake Burtnieks (surface area 40.06 km2; water renewal six to seven times per year).
