Mazinger Toy Lines
Go Nagai's Mazinger related mechas and characters have many different toy lines, developed since Mazinger first appeared in the 1970s. Some of the most well known ones are described here. Popy Jumbo Machinder Popy was a classic Japanese toy maker, creator of the Chogokin line of toys, which later folded into its parent company Bandai. When it released its Jumbo Machinder line, Mazinger Z was the first character chosen for the line. They were 22-24 inch tall, moderately articulated figures made of polyethylene. Later on, Great Mazinger and Grendizer models were made, with similar characteristics. They were also introduced in North America thanks to Mattel, who rebranded the line as Shogun Warriors. Some Mazinger Z villains, the Mechanical Beasts, were also ported to this line, though they didn't have the same format as the hero robot, being only 19-21 inches tall and made of soft vinyl. Go Nagai
, better known by the pen name , is a Japanese manga artist and a prolific author of science fiction, fantasy, horror and erotica. He made his professional debut in 1967 with ''Meakashi Polikichi'', but is best known for creating popular 1970s manga and anime series such as '' Cutie Honey'', '' Devilman'' and '' Mazinger Z''. He is credited with creating the super robot genre and for designing the first mecha robots piloted by a user from within a cockpit with ''Mazinger Z'',Mark Gilson, "A Brief History of Japanese Robophilia", ''Leonardo'' 31 (5), pp. 367–369 68 and for pioneering the magical girl genre with ''Cutie Honey'', the post-apocalyptic manga/anime genre with '' Violence Jack'', and the ecchi genre with '' Harenchi Gakuen''. Tetsujin 28
, known as simply ''Tetsujin 28'' in international releases, is a 1956 manga written and illustrated by Mitsuteru Yokoyama, who also created ''Giant Robo''. The series centers on the adventures of a young boy named Shotaro Kaneda, who controls a giant robot named Tetsujin 28, built by his late father. The manga was later adapted into four anime television series, a Japanese television drama and two films, one live action and one animated. Released in 1963, the first series was among the first Japanese anime series to feature a giant robot. It was later released in the United States as '' Gigantor''. Koji Kabuto
, also written Kouji Kabuto, is a fictional character featuring introduced Go Nagai's manga '' Mazinger Z''. He is the main character and pilot of title super robot using its powers to defeat the forces from Dr. Hell. He makes a comeback in the sequel series '' Great Mazinger'' following his defeat in the original series. He also features in '' Grendizer'' as Duke Fleed's friend and sidekick as well alternate takes of ''Mazinger Z'' franchise. Go Nagai created Koji Kabuto in order to appeal to children in regards to his anti-heroic traits. His usage of a robot was meant to add fun to the concept of how fun can be robots if a child is behind it. Multiple voice actors provided their talent for Koji' character. Devilman
is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Go Nagai. The manga focuses on a high school student named Akira Fudo who absorbs the powers of the demon called " Amon" with help of his friend Ryo Asuka in order to battle creatures hidden in human society, thus calling himself the "Devilman" in the process. The series was originally ordered by Toei Animation as a toned-down anime version of Nagai's previous manga series, '' Demon Lord Dante''. However, Nagai wrote a darker-toned manga in order to alert readers of the dangers of the wars based on how dark the narrative becomes with each of Akira's challenges. Mazinger Angels
is a manga series which began in 2004 and chronicles the adventures of four women who pilot giant robots in the Mazinger vein. The concept is a spoof on the late 1970s and early 1980s popular TV series Charlie's Angels. It was originally published in Kodansha's ''Magazine Z'', starting on 26 June 2004 (#2004-08) and ending on 25 November 2006 (#2007-01). It was compiled in four ''tankōbon''. Three of the robots, Aphrodite A, Diana A and Minerva X are from the original Mazinger Z series, while Venus A is from the Great Mazinger series. Their pilots are also traditional characters from Go Nagai's universe, Sayaka Yumi and Jun Hono from Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger respectively, and Hikaru Makiba and Maria Fleed from Grendizer. The style of the manga highlights the sex appeal of both the characters and the mechas, sometimes similarly to the way Agent Aika, Aika's female characters are shown.
