Al Mays
Albert C. Mays (May 17, 1865 – May 7, 1905) was an American baseball pitcher. He played five seasons in Major League Baseball for the Louisville Colonels (1885), New York Metropolitans (1886–1887), Brooklyn Bridegrooms (1888), Columbus Solons (1889–1890), all in the American Association. In 1887, he appeared in a career-high 52 games, threw 50 complete games, and led the American Association that year with 34 losses and 232 earned runs allowed. Mays concluded his pitching career in the minor leagues, including stints with Erie (1891, 1893, 1894), Wilkes-Barre (1892), and Peoria (1892). Mays was born in 1865 in Canal Dover, Ohio. Isaiah Mays
Isaiah Mays (February 16, 1858 – May 2, 1925) was a Buffalo Soldier in the United States Army and a recipient of America's highest military decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions during the Wham Paymaster Robbery in Arizona Territory. Biography Mays was born into slavery in Virginia. He joined the Army from Columbus Barracks, Ohio in September 1881. By May 11, 1889, he was serving as a corporal in Company B of the 24th Infantry Regiment in the Arizona Territory. On that day, he was among the troops attacked during the Wham Paymaster Robbery. Major Joseph W. Wham was transporting a payroll consisting of more than US$28,000 in gold and silver coins from Fort Grant to Fort Thomas when he and his escort of eleven Buffalo Soldiers were ambushed. At the site of the ambush, the bandits had rolled a boulder across the road the Wham convoy was using to block it. Gerry Mays (18 July 1921 – 20 March 2006) was a Scottish football player and manager. He played for Hibernian, St Johnstone, Dunfermline Athletic and Kilmarnock, and then managed Ayr United. Frances Mays (born December 1, 1990) is an American football defensive lineman who most recently played for the Bloomington Edge of the Indoor Football League (IFL). He played college football at Florida A&M University and attended Bemidji High School in Bemidji, Minnesota. He has also been a member of the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Storm. Eddie Lee Mays
Eddie Lee Mays (March 15, 1929 – August 15, 1963) was the last person to be executed by the state of New York. He was convicted of first degree murder and robbery in 1962. Mays was 34 years old at the time of execution. Early life Mays was born in Walstonburg, North Carolina on March 15, 1929. Eddie was the youngest of five children, and his father abandoned the family for Baltimore, where he would go to prison for murder, when Eddie was 6 months old. Mays dropped out of school when he was 14 and spent the next several months working menial jobs in his home town. He later left for Baltimore, and first appeared on a police blotter in 1945. Mays was arrested for larceny, then assault for slashing his live-in girlfriend with a razor. After spending six months in jail, he returned to North Carolina. Doris Crouse-Mays (born 1958) is an American labor leader. A native of Rural Retreat, Virginia, Crouse-Mays began her career as a telephone operator; as a shop steward she soon because involved in the organized labor movement. She first joined the Communications Workers of America, and later did organizational work for the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. Thanks to her abilities in the role, she became the state field director for the national AFL–CIO in 1997, in which position she attracted new members and expanded the group's political reach. Devante Roshard Mays (born May 26, 1994) is an American football running back who is currently a free agent. He played college football at Utah State and Blinn College. Early years Mays was born to Mark and Elwanda Mays in Livingston, Texas and is one of ten children the couple had together. He attended Livingston High School where he played football, ran track, and competed in power-lifting. During his senior year on the football team, he led the team to a 5–0 record and was averaging over 10 yards a carry. David W. Mays III (born June 20, 1949 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas) is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League. He was signed by the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 1976. He played college football at Texas Southern. Mays also played for the Buffalo Bills. Professional career Mays began his pro football career in 1974 with the World Football League's Houston Texans and Shreveport Steamer before coming to the NFL. He is known for filling in for Brian Sipe, who was knocked out of a game on October 10, 1976 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
