Horace Mayhew
Horace Mayhew (20 June 1845 – 15 August 1926) of Broughton Hall, Flintshire, was a British mining engineer and colliery owner who founded the town of Broughton, Nova Scotia, now one of Canada's most famous ghost towns. He was the son of John Mayhew Esq of Platt Bridge House, Co. Lancaster, and Elizabeth Mayhew (née Rapley), JP Lancashire (1876), JP Flintshire (1888), Deputy Lieutenant (1900), and High Sheriff of Flintshire (1904). Educated at King William’s College, Isle of Man, Mayhew began his career as an apprentice with the Wigan, Coal and Iron Company Ltd. Mayhew soon established himself as a preeminent mining engineer managing and part-owning collieries throughout the Wigan district. He became Managing Director of the Brinsop Hall Colliery Company working in partnership with A. H. Leech. Thomas Mayhew
Governor Thomas Mayhew, the Elder (March 31, 1593 – March 25, 1682) established the first European settlement on Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and adjacent islands in 1642. He is one of the editors of the Bay Psalm Book, the first book published in the Thirteen Colonies. His assistant Peter Foulger was the grandfather of Benjamin Franklin. Robert Mayhew
Robert Wellington Mayhew, (October 13, 1880 – July 28, 1971) was a Canadian politician and diplomat. Born in Cobden, Ontario, the son of Charles Mayhew and Sarah Dunlop Mayhew, he founded the Sidney Roofing and Paper Co. Ltd. in 1912 which became one of Victoria's largest businesses. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Victoria in a 1937 by-election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1940, 1945, and 1949. From 1945 to 1948, he was the parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Finance. From 1948 to 1952, he was the Minister of Fisheries. Patrick Barnabas Burke Mayhew, Baron Mayhew of Twysden, (11 September 1929 – 25 June 2016) was a British barrister and politician. Nell Brooker Mayhew
Nell Brooker Mayhew (April 17, 1875 – September 24, 1940) was an American painter, etcher and art instructor. Early life Mayhew was born Nell Cole Danely in Astoria, Illinois on April 17, 1875. She was the eldest child of Alfred M. Danley, a Methodist minister, and Ella (Cole) Danely. As a child she showed an early interest and aptitude for art. When she was sixteen, one of her paintings was accepted for the Art Institute of Chicago's Annual Exhibition of Watercolors by American Artists. Education and personal life Mayhew attended Northwestern University, graduating in 1897. She continued her art studies at the University of Illinois, between 1901 and 1906 as a student of Newton A. Martin Mayhew (born October 8, 1965) is an American football executive who is the general manager of the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). A former cornerback, Mayhew played college football at Florida State prior to being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the tenth round of the 1988 NFL Draft. He sat out his rookie season due to a wrist injury and joined the Washington Redskins a year later, with whom he won Super Bowl XXVI with, and later played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before retiring following the 1996 season. Matthew Mayhew
Governor Matthew Mayhew (1644 or 1648 – 1710) was son of Thomas Mayhew Jr., and grandson of Thomas Mayhew Sr., an early settler of Martha's Vineyard, and a governor of the Vineyard, Nantucket and adjacent islands. Matthew succeeded his grandfather as Governor and Chief Magistrate in 1681/2, and occasionally preached to the Indians. He was appointed judge of the Court of Common Pleas for Dukes county in 1697, and remained on the bench until 1700. He was judge of probate from 1696 to 1710. He died in 1710.
