Hessian Fly
The Hessian fly (''Mayetiola destructor''), or barley midge, is a species of fly that is a significant pest of cereal crops, including wheat, barley and rye. Though a native of Asia, upon its discovery it was believed to have been transported into North America in the straw bedding of Hessian troops during the American Revolution (1775–1783), thus the origin of its common name. However, the report of an inquiry made in 1788 by Sir Joseph Banks states that "no such insect could be found to exist in Germany or any other part of Europe". Nonetheless, it appears that this species, or one exactly like it in habits, had been known for at least a century prior to the American Revolution from a locality near Geneva, and also for a long time from some regions in France. The Hessian fly was described by Thomas Say in 1817. It is a very harmful insect. It mainly attacks the stem, although if it is especially hungry it will eat any part of the plant it can find. In 1836, a severe infes ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Cecidomyiinae
The Cecidomyiinae, commonly known as gall midges or gall gnats, is the largest subfamily in Cecidomyiidae with over 600 genera and more than 5000 described species. Some of the herbivorous species are inquilines, developing in galls that were initiated by a different midge species. Most species in the genus '' Macrolabis'' and the tribes Trotteriini and Camptoneuromyiini are inquilines, but there are also many inquiline species in genera that are predominantly gall-inducing (such as '' Dasineura'' and '' Lasioptera''). Predatory and parasitoid species comprise about 12% of the Cecidomyiinae. Larvae of these species attack other arthropods - there are known predators of mites, aphids, scale insects, dragonfly eggs, and endoparasitoids of Hemiptera. Most are found in the tribes Aphidoletini and Lestodiplosini. Fungivores make up much of the remainder of the subfamily, indicating the retention of (or reversion to) the ancestral food source. Mayetiola Thujae
''Mayetiola thujae'', the redcedar cone midge, is a species of gall midge that infects western redcedar (''Thuja plicata'') cones. Description Males are long on average. Females are somewhat larger, averaging in length, and have retractible ovipositors. The adults of both sexes are dark gray. Ecology Eggs are laid on the inner surface of female western redcedar cones in the March or April, shortly after pollination occurs. The eggs are oblong and translucent, but appear to be orange due to the color of the larvae. The eggs hatch in April or May after a month of incubation. The larvae, which grow up to long, feed on the seeds and tissue of the cone before beginning to pupate in late summer. As a control measure, insecticides can be applied to western redcedar cones in the spring. The larvae are often infected by parasitoid wasps of the family Chalcididae The Chalcididae are a moderate-sized family within the Chalcidoidea, composed mostly of parasitoids and a few hyperpa ...
