May Tao Secret Zone
The May Tao Secret Zone was located in the Mây Tào Mountains of South Vietnam, a heavily forested area located at the intersection of Long Khánh, Phước Tuy and Bình Tuy Provinces, that served as a Viet Cong (VC) divisional sanctuary. The zone was the location of the headquarters for the VC 5th Division and 275th Regiment. Mây Tào Mountains
The Mây Tào Mountains are a set of tortoise shaped mountains 45 kilometres north east of Nui Dat and was primarily located in Bình Tuy Province and partly with the Phước Tuy Province and Long Khánh Province. Nui Mây Tào was the topographical junction point for the Long Khánh, Bình Tuy and Phước Tuy provinces. During the Vietnam War the mountains were used as a headquarters for the Vietcong (VC) 5th Division and 275th Regiment, known as May Tao Secret Zone and Base Area 300, and was a well-developed, heavily dug-in, tunnelled and fortified base area. It had been a VC HQ and logistics base, training area and hospital zone for many years. South Vietnam
South Vietnam, officially the Republic of Vietnam (RVN; , VNCH), was a country in Southeast Asia that existed from 1955 to 1975. The Viet Cong (VC) was an epithet and umbrella term to refer to the communist-driven armed movement and united front organization in South Vietnam. It was formally organized as and led by the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam, and conducted military operations under the name of the Liberation Army of South Vietnam (LASV). The movement fought under the direction of North Vietnam against the South Vietnamese and United States governments during the Vietnam War. The organization had both guerrilla and regular army units, as well as a network of cadres who organized and mobilized peasants in the territory the VC controlled. 5th Infantry Division (Vietnam)
The VC 5th Infantry Division was a division of the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War and later became part of the People's Army of Vietnam. History The division was formed on 23 October 1965 from the 4th "Đồng Nai" Regiment and the newly formed 5th Regiment, which was drawn from local forces. The division later comprised the 274th Regiment (Vietnamese: 4th "Đồng Nai" Regiment) and 275th Regiment (Vietnamese: "Cá Gô" 55 Regiment) plus supporting units. 275th Regiment
The 275th Regiment, also known as 275 Viet Cong Main Force Regiment, was a regiment of the Viet Cong (VC) during the Vietnam War. The regiment was formed in May 1965. History The 275th Regiment, with nickname "Cá Gô" 55 Regiment - was part of the VC 5th Division and operated in the Phuoc Tuy Province, now known as the province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau. During the United States military intervention in Vietnam, the 275th Regiment took part in 280 minor and major clashes, shooting 84 enemy aircraft (including 3 US B-52s, 3 US AC-130s and 26 helicopters of all types) in the process.
