Maxwell Land Grant
The Maxwell Land Grant, also known as the Beaubien-Miranda Land Grant, was a Land grants in New Mexico and Colorado, Mexican land grant in Colfax County, New Mexico, and part of adjoining Las Animas County, Colorado. This 1841 land grant was one of the largest contiguous private landholdings in the history of the United States. Ute Park, New Mexico
Ute Park is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 71. It was formerly part of the Maxwell Land Grant. Ute Park lies on U.S. Route 64 between Cimarron and Eagle Nest, just east of Cimarron Canyon State Park. In 1921, the ''Guide to New Mexico'' described it as: Ute Park was named for the Ute Indians, who lived on the east slope of near-by Mt. Baldy. The rebellious Ute resisted their white oppressors, and an Indian Agency and military force were maintained at Cimarron to keep them subdued, until they were finally moved to a reservation in southern Colorado and Utah. Fishers Peak State Park
Fishers Peak State Park is a Colorado state park in Las Animas County, Colorado, just south of Trinidad. Trinidad Lake State Park is nearby. The park opened on October 30, 2020, and is still being developed. History The land for the park, formerly the privately-held Crazy French Ranch, was purchased in 2019. Funds to purchase the ranch came jointly from Great Outdoors Colorado, the funding arm of the Colorado Lottery, The Nature Conservancy, and The Trust for Public Land. Geography The park takes its name from Fishers Peak, elevation , a prominent, flat-topped mountain and the highest point on Raton Mesa. The mesa was designated a Natural National Landmark in 1967. Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge
The Maxwell National Wildlife Refuge, located in the high central plains of northeastern New Mexico, was established in 1965 as a feeding and resting area for migratory birds. Philmont Scout Ranch
Philmont Scout Ranch is a ranch located in Colfax County, New Mexico, United States, near the village of Cimarron. Donated by oil baron Waite Phillips, the ranch is owned by Scouting America. It is a high adventure base where crews of Scouts and Venturers take part in backpacking treks and other outdoor activities. The ranch covers nearly of wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains and by land area is one of the largest youth camps in the world. Philmont is also home to the Philmont Training Center, the National Scouting Museum, and the Seton Memorial Library. Colfax County War
The Colfax County War was a range war that occurred from 1873 to 1888 between settlers and the new owners of the Maxwell Land Grant in Colfax County, in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The war started when the new landowners tried to remove the local settlers from the land they had just bought. The locals refused to leave, as they had settled much of their livelihood in the grant, which resulted in conflict and violence in 1875. Background The disputed territory began as a land grant from the Mexican provincial governor of Santa Fe de Nuevo México to Charles H. Beaubien and Guadalupe Miranda in 1841, which included large portions of what is now Colfax County in northern New Mexico and Las Animas County in southern Colorado.
