''Max Schmitt in a Single Scull'' (also known as ''The Champion Single Sculls'' or ''The Champion, Single Sculls'') is an 1871 oil-on-canvas painting by the American artist Thomas Eakins, List of works by Thomas Eakins, Goodrich catalogue #44. It is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Set on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it celebrates Eakins's friend Max Schmitt's victory in the October 5, 1870, single sculls competition. The sculler Max Schmitt (1843–1900) had attended Central High School (Philadelphia), Philadelphia Central High School with Eakins, and the two were close friends. Schmitt was a member of the Pennsylvania Barge Club – as, it is presumed, was Eakins – one of nine men's clubs in the Schuylkill Navy, and twelve that rowed on the river. Max-Joseph Schmitt (born 18 January 2006) is a German professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for club SSV Ulm, on loan from Bayern Munich. Early life Schmitt grew up in Milbertshofen-Am Hart, Germany. Club career Early career Schmitt is a youth product of his childhood hometown club TSV Milbertshofen. He joined the youth academy of German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich at the age of eleven on 2017. Bayern Munich He received his first call-up with the Bayern Munich senior team for their first UEFA Champions League group stage match on 20 September 2023, against English Premier League club Manchester United. Max Schmidt (23 August 1818 – 8 January 1901) was a German people, German landscape Painting, painter. Biography Schmidt was a native of Berlin, Province of Brandenburg. He studied in the Akademie der Künste, Berlin Art Academy under Carl Joseph Begas and Wilhelm Schirmer. He was largely influenced in his choice of subjects and in his treatment by his familiarity with Egypt and Greece, and paid little heed to Germany, German scenes until 1854, but then treated them with rare poetic feeling. In 1868 he became instructor at the School of Arts in Weimar, and in 1872 went to the Königsberg Academy. His chief works are the Oriental frescoes in the Berlin Museum, “Wood and Mountain” (1868) and “A View on the Spree” (1877), both in the Berlin National Gallery.
