Maurizio Carnino
Maurizio Carnino (born 7 March 1975 in Turin) is an Italian short track speed skater and long track speed skater. He is a four-time Olympian, competing in the 1994 Lillehammer, 1998 Nagano, 2002 Salt Lake City, and 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. Career Short track career A specialist in the shorter distances, Carnino was long a dependable member of the Italian short track speed skating relay team. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Carnino, as an 18-year-old, was a member of the Italian relay team which won the gold medal in the 5000 metre relay competition along with Orazio Fagone, Hugo Herrnhof and Mirko Vuillermin. Four years later Carnino competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics where he finished fourth in the 5000 metre relay and 15th in the 500 metres. Short-track speed skating is a form of competitive ice speed skating. In competitions, multiple skaters (typically between four and six) skate on an oval ice track with a length of . The rink itself is long by wide, which is the same size as an Olympic-sized figure skating rink and an international-sized ice hockey rink. The 1998 Winter Olympics, officially known as the and commonly known as Nagano 1998 ( ja, 長野1998), was a winter multi-sport event held from 7 to 22 February 1998, mainly in Nagano, Japan, with some events taking place in the nearby mountain communities of Hakuba, Karuizawa, Nozawa Onsen, and Yamanouchi. Mirko Vuillermin (born 2 August 1973) is a retired Italian short track speed skater who competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics and in the 1994 Winter Olympics. Career Vuillermin was born in Aosta. At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, Vuillermin was a member of the Italian relay team that finished eighth in the 5000 metre relay. On 27 March 1993, at the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Beijing, Vuillermin broke Mark Lackie's 500 m world record, recording a time of 43.08, with the gold medal in the 500 metres, which was Italy's first individual world championship gold medal in short track speed skating. Hugo Herrnhof (born September 21, 1964 in Bolzano) is an Italian retired short track speed skater who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics, 1992 Winter Olympics and 1994 Winter Olympics. Career Herrnhof competed in the short track speed skating events at the 1988 Winter Olympics when this sport was a demonstration sport. He was a member of the Italian relay team which finished second in the 5000 metre relay. Though he never reached the top individually in major international competitions, he finished second in 500 m and third in 3000 m and fourth in the overall standings at the 1990 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships. Orazio Fagone (born 13 November 1968) is an Italian sledge hockey player and former short track speed skater who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics, 1992 Winter Olympics and 1994 Winter Olympics. After a motorcycle accident, he also competed as paralympic hockey player and wheelchair curler.
