Maurice Arthur Pryor
Maurice Arthur Pryor (23 June 1911 – 20 December 1969) was an English brewing executive who served as President of the Institute of Brewing. Life Maurice Arthur Pryor was born on 23 June 1911, the son of Major John Arthur Pryor. Brewing
Brewing is the production of beer by steeping a starch source (commonly cereal grains, the most popular of which is barley) in water and #Fermenting, fermenting the resulting sweet liquid with Yeast#Beer, yeast. European Brewery Convention
The European Brewery Convention (EBC) is an organisation representing the technical and scientific interests of the brewing sector in Europe. The EBC defines itself as the scientific and technological arm of The Brewers of Europe. Among brewers, EBC is perhaps best known for the EBC units measuring beer and wort colour, as well as EBC units for quantifying turbidity (also known as haze) in beer. Brewers' Company
The Worshipful Company of Brewers is one of the ancient livery companies of the City of London. History London brewers are known to have organised as a group in the 13th century. Its first royal charter was granted by Henry VI in 1438. In 1643, Parliament imposed excise taxes on beer, ale, and malt, steadily increasing them until gin became cheaper, causing the growth of unlicensed breweries and, in 1685, James II extended the Company's jurisdiction to eight miles around London and its suburbs. In 1739 it adopted new by-laws, which included the requirement for its liverymen to "enter into a bond ..with the Company against any expenses of their being elected to the office of Sheriff or Lord Mayor", but as the population of London spread outwards from the City, the Company's industry influence continued to decline. John Frederic Gretton, 2nd Baron Gretton OBE (15 August 1902 – 26 March 1982), was a British peer and Conservative Member of Parliament. Gretton was the son of John Gretton, 1st Baron Gretton, and Hon. Maud Helen de Moleyns, daughter of Dayrolles Blakeney Eveleigh-de-Moleyns, 4th Baron Ventry. Lord Gretton was educated at Eton. He was elected to the House of Commons for Burton in 1943 (succeeding his father), a seat he held until 1945. George Mesnard Parsons (1890 – 26 February 1963) was an English brewer who served as President of the Institute of Brewing. Career Parsons was born in 1890. He entered the brewing industry as a pupil at the Swan Brewery in Fulham in 1910. He later worked at two London breweries, rose to be a junior brewer and received the Silver Medal in Malting and Brewing from the City and Guilds of London Institute. Godfrey Argent
Bernard Godfrey Argent (6 February 1937 – 1 June 2006) was an English photographer notable for his black and white portraits of royalty, politicians, aristocrats and celebrities. Early life Argent was born in Eastbourne, Sussex, the son of motor engineer Godfrey Stanley Albert Argent, and his wife, Helena (''née'' Smith). He had two sisters. He was educated at Bexhill Grammar School, and then briefly entered the police constabulary, where he first learned photography. Career In 1954, Argent joined the Royal Horse Guards, Household Cavalry, serving with the Life Guards for nine years. In 1960, he became an Associate Member of the Royal Photographic Society and won the British Army Photographic Competition. He photographed Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer, who encouraged him to pursue photography instead of staying in the military.
