Maude Mary Ball
Maude Mary Ball (5 April 1883 – 7 April 1969), was an Irish artist working in both paintings and sculpture. Life Maude Mary Ball was born on 5 April 1883 to Valentine Ball and his wife Mary Stewart-Moore in Dublin. Her father was a geologist and Director at Science and Art Museum in Dublin. Her younger sister Ethel Gresley Ball was also an artist. She was educated privately, and went to study at the Royal Hibernian Academy Schools and at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, winning prizes at both institutions. She was an artist who was a member of the Royal Dublin Society and the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland. She exhibited at RHA Annual Exhibition from 1910 until 1935, showing 50 pieces in that time. Valentine Ball
Valentine Ball (14 July 1843 – 15 June 1895) was an Irish geologist, son of Robert Ball (1802–1857) and a brother of Sir Robert Ball. Ball worked in India for twenty years before returning to take up a position in Ireland. Life and work Valentine was born in Dublin, the second son of Robert Ball and Amelia Gresley Hellicar. His siblings included Robert Stawell Ball, sisters Mary Agnetta (d. 1868), Amelia Charlotte (d. 1912), Annie Francis and surgeon Sir Charles Ball. He received his early education at Chester and later at the private schools of Dr. Henry and Dr. Benson at Dublin. He then went to the University of Dublin obtaining a B.A. in 1864, M.A. in 1872 and LL.D. in 1889. He was elected Fellow of the Geological Society of London in 1874. Ethel Gresley Ball (24 November 1886 – 3 July 1959), was an Irish artist working in both paintings and sculpture. She is best known for her studies of animals at the Royal Zoological Gardens, Dublin. Life Ethel Gresley Ball was born on 24 November 1886 to Valentine Ball and his wife Gresley Stewart-Moore in Dublin. Her father was a geologist and Director at Science and Art Museum in Dublin. The Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) is an artist-based and artist-oriented institution in Ireland, founded in Dublin in 1823. Like many other Irish institutions, such as the RIA, the academy retained the word "Royal" after most of Ireland became independent as the Irish Free State in December 1922. Marie Howet (24 March 1897 – 24 March 1984) was a Belgian expressionist painter and illustrator. Marie Françoise Céline Howet was born in Libramont, daughter of Constant Howet, a doctor, and Pauline Thiry. She received a musical education and learned drawing, attending school in Arlon. Originally she planned to study music but instead chose art and enrolled at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Here she studied under Constant Montald. In her first year she received several prizes, but the outbreak of the First World War led to her family's exile in France. In 1915 she enrolled in the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After the war she returned to Belgium and set up a studio at Rochehaut, near Bouillon, later moving to Saint Gilles. Achill Island (; ga, Acaill, Oileán Acla) in County Mayo is the largest of the Irish isles, and is situated off the west coast of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It has a population of 2,594. Mary Harriet "Mainie" Jellett (29 April 1897, Dublin – 16 February 1944, Dublin) was an Irish painter whose ''Decoration'' (1923) was among the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland when it was exhibited at the Society of Dublin Painters Group Show in 1923.
