Matti Pitkänen
Matti Pitkänen (born 20 December 1948, in Ikaalinen) is a Finnish former cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skier who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He won two medals in the 4 × 10 km relay at the Winter Olympics with a gold in 1976 and a bronze in 1980. He also finished sixth in the 30 km at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Pitkänen also won a silver medal in the 4 × 10 km relay at the 1978 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti. He also finished fourth in the 15 km, 30 km, and 50 km events at those same games. Ikaalinen (; ) is a city and municipality of Finland. It is part of the Pirkanmaa region, located northwest of Tampere. The town has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The men's 50 kilometre cross-country skiing competition at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, was held on Saturday 14 February at Seefeld in Tirol, Seefeld. Gerhard Grimmer of East Germany was the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1974, 1974 World champion and Pål Tyldum of Norway was the defending champion from the 1972 Winter Olympics, 1972 Olympics in Sapporo, Japan. Each skier started at half a minute intervals, skiing the entire 50 kilometre course. Of the 59 athletes who started the race, 15 did not finish.
