Matthew Whelan (hurler)
Matthew Whelan (born 1 February 1988) is an Irish hurler who plays for Laois Senior Championship club Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton. He is a former member of the Laois senior hurling team. Career Whelan first came to Gaelic games prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Borris-in-Ossory club, before eventually joining the club's top adult team. After the creation of the new Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton club, he went on to win a County Senior Championship in 2016, having earlier won three intermediate titles. Whelan first played at inter-county level as a dual player with the Laois minor teams. He won a Leinster Minor Championship title in 2005, before winning an All-Ireland Schools' Championship title in 2006. Whelan was straight out of the minor grade when he made his Laois senior hurling team debut in 2007. Borris-in-Ossory GAA
Borris-in-Ossory GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the small town of Borris-in-Ossory, County Laois, Ireland. The club colours are red and white and the club grounds are called O'Keefe Park. Formerly, primarily a hurling club, Borris-in-Ossory now operates solely as a gaelic football club. It amalgamates at all age levels with its neighbouring club, Kilcotton GAA, with which it competes in hurling as Borris-in-Ossory–Kilcotton GAA. The clubs however field separate Gaelic football teams, and compete as separate clubs in the Laois Junior C Football Championship. The club won five Laois Senior Hurling Championships, the last of which came in 1972. The Laois and Leinster hurler Christy O'Brien played in all five wins and was captain for the first four wins between 1956 and 1961. Leinster Senior Hurling Championship
The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship. The final, usually held on the first Sunday in July, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during May and June, and the results determine which team receives the Bob O'Keeffe Cup. The championship was previously played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team lost they were eliminated from the championship; however, as of 2018, the championship involved a round-robin system. Borris-in-Ossory Hurlers
Borris-in-Ossory (, or the 'Burgage of Osraige') is a village in west County Laois, Ireland. Bypassed by the M7 motorway on 28 May 2010, the village is situated on the R445 road close to the County Tipperary border between the towns of Mountrath and Roscrea. Features The village has facilities such as a school, churches, community hall, convenience retail outlets and a number of service businesses. The village centre comprises Main Street and includes retail, commercial, institutional, educational and residential functions. Ireland National Hurling Team
The Ireland national hurling team, consisting solely of hurlers, is a representative team for Ireland (both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland) in the sport of composite rules shinty–hurling. The team is usually made up of a mixture of high-profile hurlers who compete in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship as well as lesser-known players who play for smaller counties which traditionally compete in the Christy Ring and Nicky Rackard Cups. At present the only team it plays is the Scotland national shinty team, on an annual basis in the Shinty–Hurling International Series. Ireland have won 7 of 12 series played at men's senior level. The current managers of the senior men's team are Jeffrey Lynskey and Gregory O'Kane, who took over the role from Michael Walshe at the end of 2014. A former captain of the team was Tommy Walsh. Joe Fitzpatrick (hurler)
Joe Fitzpatrick (born 29 April 1984) is an Irish hurler who plays as a right wing-back for the Laois senior team. Born in Rathdowney, County Laois, Fitzpatrick first played competitive hurling in his youth. He made his senior debut for Laois during the 2003 National Hurling League. He has gone on to play a key role for Laois for over a decade, and has won one National League (Division 2) medal. At club level he Fitzpatrick is a five-time championship medallist with Rathdowney–Errill. Joe is also a Hurley Maker based just outside Rathdowney. The 2005 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship was the 74th staging of the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county Gaelic football tournament for boys under the age of 18. Tyrone entered the championship as defending champions, however, they were defeated by Down in the Ulster quarter-final. On 25 September 2005, Down won the championship following a 1–15 to 0–8 defeat of Mayo in the All-Ireland final. 2007 National Hurling League
The 2007 National Hurling League was the 76th season of the National Hurling League, the top leagues for inter-county hurling teams, since its establishment in 1925. The fixtures were announced on 28 November 2006. The season began on 18 February 2007 and concluded on 29 April 2007. Division 1A Kilkenny came into the season as defending champions of the 2006 season. Dublin entered Division 1 as the promoted team. On 29 April 2007, Waterford won the title after a 0-20 to 0-18 win over Kilkenny. It was their first league title since 1963 and their second National League title overall. Antrim and Down were the first two teams to be relegated to Division 2 after finishing bottom of Divisions 1A and 1B respectively. Offaly were the third team to be relegated after being beaten by Limerick in a play-off.
