Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College
Matthew Flinders Girls' Secondary College is an all-girls State secondary school located in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. It provides education for students from years 7–12. History The school opened as Flinders National Grammar School in January 1858. The foundation stone was laid on 5 December 1856 by the administrator of the Colony of Victoria, Colonel Edward Macarthur. It is believed that the architect involved was the local German-born architect, Frank Kawerau, of Ryrie Street, Geelong, who also designed many government buildings across Victoria, including ''Willsmere'' (formerly Kew Lunatic Asylum (1864)), which has very similar architecture. Edward Macarthur
Lieutenant-General Sir Edward Macarthur (16 March 1789 – 4 January 1872) was a lieutenant-general in the British Army, Commander-in-chief of British forces in Australia from 1855, and an administrator of the Colony of Victoria for 12 months, following the death of the Governor, Sir Charles Hotham. Early life Macarthur was the eldest son of John Macarthur, and his wife Elizabeth (''née'' Veal). He was born at Bath, Somerset, England, and arrived at Sydney with his parents in the ships ''Neptune'' and ''Scarborough'' in 1790, part of the Second Fleet. Captain (Royal Navy), Captain Matthew Flinders (16 March 1774 – 19 July 1814) was a British Royal Navy officer, navigator and cartographer who led the first littoral zone, inshore circumnavigate, circumnavigation of mainland Australia, then called New Holland (Australia), New Holland. You Yangs
The You Yangs are a series of granite ridges that rise up to above the flat and low-lying Werribee Plain in southern Victoria, Australia, approximately due west of the rural town of Little River, southwest of Melbourne CBD and north of Geelong. The main ridge runs roughly north-south for about , with a lower extension running for about to the west. Much of the southern section of the range is protected in You Yangs Regional Park. The You Yangs sits about halfway between the Brisbane Ranges to the west and the nearest coast, at Corio Bay to the south-east. Minnie Elizabeth Cawthorn
Minnie Elizabeth Cawthorn (23 August 1898 – 10 May 1966) was an Australian headmistress and aviator. She transformed what is now Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College from dilapidated to pristine. Life Cawthorn was born in Prahran in 1898. She was the third child of Fanny Adelaide, née Williams and William Cawthorn. Her English-born father was a commercial traveller who went to work in publishing. She and her elder brother, Walter Cawthorn, trained to be schoolteachers. When she was senior mistress at Mildura High School in 1939 she found time to learn to fly and then qualified as a flying instructor. In 1948 Cawthorn became the head of a school in Geelong.
