Matthew Cappucci
Matthew E. Cappucci (born 1997) is an American meteorologist, reporter, storm chaser, and author. He is a member of ''The Washington Post''’s Capital Weather Gang and a frequent contributor to WAMU radio, NPR, and the BBC, among other media outlets. Early life and education Cappucci was born and raised in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where he attended Indian Brook Elementary School and Plymouth South Middle School, both in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He became fascinated with weather after noticing—at a very young age—how anemometers would spin atop the roofs of buildings, seemingly without anything touching them, which led to an interest in wind and how it is measured. The Waffle House Index is a Performance indicator, metric named after the ubiquitous Southern US restaurant chain Waffle House known for its 24-hour, 365-day service. Since this restaurant always remains open (except in extreme circumstances), it has given rise to an informal but useful metric to determine the severity of a storm and the likely scale of assistance required for disaster recovery. The metric was first conceived of by journalist Matt Dellinger and the term later coined by former administrator Craig Fugate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The metric is unofficially used by FEMA to inform disaster response.
