Matt Turmaine
Matthew Robert Turmaine is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Watford since the 2024 general election. He was previously the Watford Borough Councillor for Holywell ward from 2012 until his election to Parliament. Early and personal life Matthew Robert Turmaine was born at Amersham Hospital in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Before his election to Parliament, he worked in health and social care. He also previously worked for the BBC for 15 years. Turmaine is a member of the Unison trade union. Political career Turmaine joined the Labour Party in 2004, whilst living in London. After moving to Watford in 2011, he stood as the Labour Party candidate for Holywell ward in the 2012 Watford Borough Council election, where he gained the seat from the Liberal Democrats with a majority of 710 votes. 2012 Watford Borough Council Election
Elections to Watford Borough Council were held on 3 May 2012. Three years in every four, a third of the council (12 councillors) retires and elections are held (in the fourth year, elections are held for county councillors). In this council election, the Labour Party gained two seats from the Liberal Democrats; the Liberal Democrats gained one from the Conservatives. However, the Liberal Democrats remained firmly in control of the council. Four parties, Liberal Democrats, Labour, Conservative and Green, all put up candidates in every seat. ''Change'' is a political manifesto published in 2024 by the British Labour Party under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer. Watford General Hospital is a 521-bed acute District General Hospital situated on Vicarage Road, Watford, Hertfordshire. Together with Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans City Hospital, it is operated by West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. History Watford General was formed at the foundation of the National Health Service utilising buildings which were formerly the Watford workhouse and, from 1929, Shrodells Public Assistance Institution. The facility also incorporated the Peace Memorial Wing from 1965 when management of the Peace Memorial Hospital was transferred to the Shrodells site. The 2022 Watford Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022. One third (12) of the 36 members of Watford Borough Council were elected. Dame Cheryl Elise Kendall Gillan (; 21 April 1952 – 4 April 2021) was a British politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Chesham and Amersham from 1992 until her death in 2021. A member of the Conservative Party, she served as Secretary of State for Wales from 2010 to 2012. Before her parliamentary career, Gillan worked as a marketing executive for several companies. The 2019 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 12 December 2019. It resulted in the Conservative Party receiving a landslide majority of 80 seats. The Conservatives made a net gain of 48 seats and won 43.6% of the popular vote – the highest percentage for any party since 1979. 2018 Watford Borough Council Election
The 2018 Watford Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Watford Borough Council in England. This was the same day as other local elections. Watford was one of the boroughs subject to a trial of voter ID restrictions requiring the production of polling cards. Since the election of the full council in 2016, there had been three by-elections, but the balance of the council remained the same, as they were won by the defending party, in the case of Leggatts Ward by Labour and in the cases of Oxhey and Park by the Lib Dems.
