Mats Nilsson (Swedish Air Force Officer)
Lieutenant General Mats Evald Nilsson (born 30 December 1956) is a Swedish Air Force officer. He served as Inspector General of the Air Force from 2000 to 2002, as head of the Joint Forces Directorate from 2002 to 2007 and as Chief of Defence Staff in 2007. Nilsson served as the First Marshal of the Court from 2012 to 2022. Early life Nilsson was born in Västerås, Sweden and grew up in Lomma, Scania, having moved there with his parents when he was three years old. Nilsson started gliding when he was 15-year-old. Nilsson was also a talented high school student, and as such also an exchange student in the United States. At this time he was thinking of becoming a pediatrician or a chef. Conscription In Sweden
Sweden has had partial conscription for both men and women since 2017. After completing training, conscripts are placed in the reserve and assigned positions in the table of organization and equipment of a reserve unit. History Between the 17th century and 1900, Sweden had an allotment system. Mandatory military service for men was introduced in 1901. During the height of the Cold War, about 85% of Swedish men were conscripted. In 2010, the male-only system was replaced with a gender-neutral conscription system; at the same time conscription was mothballed. Mandatory conscription was re-activated by the then Social democratic government in 2017, which cited increased threats to national security. The Swedish Armed Forces planned to call 4,000 recruits annually for basic military training in 2018 and 2019. Malmen Airbase
Malmen Airbase () is a military airbase located in Malmslätt, Linköping Municipality, Östergötland County, Sweden. It is located west of Linköping. The base was opened by Carl Cederström in 1912. In the beginning the airbase had only three aircraft but more were bought in the same year. From 1926 to 1974 it served as an air force base for the Östgöta Wing (F 3). In 1974 the Wing was decommissioned, and the airbase was put under Bråvalla Wing (F 13) then later Uppland Wing (F 16). From 1998 it served as main base for the Swedish Armed Forces helicopter units, with the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing. From 2003 the Royal Swedish Airschool has been located here, to train pilots with Sk 60 jet trainers. The Swedish Air Force Museum is located on the airbase. Blekinge Wing
Blekinge Wing (), also F 17 Kallinge, or simply F 17, is a Swedish Air Force wing with the main base located near Ronneby in southern Sweden. The wing also operates the air base on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. It is one of four wings in Sweden and currently has two squadrons of JAS-39 C/D fighter aircraft. History F 17 was established on the Bredåkra moor in 1944 under the name of Kungliga Blekinge Flygflottilj, ''The Royal Blekinge Air Wing''. The moor had been used as a military training ground since the 19th century. The wing was at first mainly used for marine operations, such as torpedo and naval mine deployment.
