''The Matrix'' is a 1999 science fiction film, science fiction action film written and directed by the Wachowskis. It is the first installment in the The Matrix (franchise), ''Matrix'' film series, starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. It depicts a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped inside the Matrix, a simulated reality created by artificial intelligence, intelligent machines. Believing computer hacker Neo (The Matrix), Neo to be "the One" prophesied to defeat them, Morpheus (The Matrix), Morpheus recruits him into a rebellion against the machines. Following the success of Bound (1996 film), ''Bound'' (1996), Warner Bros. gave the go-ahead for ''The Matrix'' after the Wachowskis sent an edit of the film's opening minutes. Lana Wachowski (born Larry Wachowski, June 21, 1965) and Lilly Wachowski (born Andy Wachowski, December 29, 1967) are American film and television directors, writers and producers. The sisters are both trans women. Together known as the Wachowskis (), the sisters have worked as a writing and directing team through most of their careers. They made their directing debut in 1996 with ''Bound (1996 film), Bound'' and achieved fame with their second film, ''The Matrix'' (1999), a major box-office success for which they won the Saturn Award for Best Director.
