In materials science, a matrix is a constituent of a composite material. Functions A matrix serves the following functions: * It binds the fiber reinforcement. * It provides the composite component its shape and directs its surface quality. Organic Matrices Traditional materials such as glues, muds have traditionally been used as matrices for adobe and papier-mâché. The common matrices are polymers (mainly utilized for fibre reinforced plastics). The most common polymer-based composite materials which include carbon fibre, fibreglass and Kevlar, typically involve two parts at least, the resin and the substrate. Asphalt concrete, which is often used in the construction of roads, has a matrix called bitumen. Mud (wattle and daub) has observed considerable use. Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) are polymeric smart materials that have the ability to return from a deformed state (temporary shape) to their original (permanent) shape when induced by an external stimulus (trigger), such as temperature change. Vinyl ester resin, or often just vinyl ester, is a resin produced by the esterification of an epoxy resin with acrylic or methacrylic acids. Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) is an organic peroxide with the formula CH3)(C2H5)C(O2H)sub>2O2. MEKP is a colorless oily liquid. It is widely used in vulcanization (crosslinking) of polymers. It is derived from the reaction of methyl ethyl ketone and hydrogen peroxide under acidic conditions. Several products result from this reaction including a cyclic dimer.
