Matraville is located in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately by road south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick. History Matraville is named in honour of James Matra (1746–1806), an American sailor and diplomat, who was a midshipman on the voyage by Captain James Cook to Botany Bay in 1770. Matra was born in New York, but later settled in England. Matra had walked over the area with Cook and his close friend, botanist Joseph Banks. Matra had proposed to the British government that it establish a colony at Botany Bay in 1783, and settle dispossessed American Loyalists who had to leave the United States after the American War of Independence. Matraville Sports High School (abbreviated as MSHS) is a government co-educational comprehensive and specialist secondary school, with speciality in sports, located on Anzac Parade, Chifley, an eastern suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Chifley is a suburb in south-eastern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Chifley is 13 km south-east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the City of Randwick. History The first house built in the Chifley area was Bunnerong House, which was built in 1825. Matraville Soldiers' Settlement Public School
Matraville Soldiers' Settlement Public School is a public school that was founded in 1927 in Sydney, Australia. History The school was first founded in 1926 by a group of WWI soldiers and their families who occupied land supplied by the government on which they built around 60 houses. The school developed and began to increase in size in 1956 in its original site in Menin Road. New class rooms were built on land in Knowles Avenue also from 1956 and particularly catered for the children from the newly built public housing estate and immigrant children from a migrant centre in Poziers Avenue, which was later demolished. Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park, Eastern Suburbs Crematorium and Botany General Cemetery (aka Botany Cemetery), is a cemetery and crematorium on Bunnerong Road in Matraville, New South Wales, in the eastern suburbs district of Sydney, Australia. Land was dedicated as a cemetery site in 1888, with the first interment recorded at Botany Cemetery on 21 August 1893. The Bunnerong Cemetery (opened in 1888), and the Eastern Suburbs Crematorium (opened 1938) were merged with Botany Cemetery in 1972. There are more than 65,000 people buried there.
