Georges Mathé
Georges Mathé (9 July 1922 – 15 October 2010) was a French oncologist and immunologist. In November 1958, he performed the first successful allogeneic bone marrow transplant ever performed on unrelated human beings. Biography Georges Mathé was born in 1922 in the village of Sermages, France, from a rural family. Selected by his village school master, he was sent to study in a boarding school in Moulins, Allier. Education and early career During World War II, he participated in the French Resistance, and studied to become a medical doctor in Paris. He graduated in 1950–51 with honors. Oncology and bone marrow transplants He engaged in medical research in the early fifties, and took an internship in immunology and oncology in the Memorial Sloan–Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Vasily Vasilyevich Mate or Mathé (; ) was a Russian etcher and wood engraver of German descent. In contrast to other Russian artisans of the era which prioritized poetry, he was a skilled engraver and was one of the major engravers in Russia during the late 19th century. Lewis Lawrence Mathe (March 27, 1915 – March 10, 1986) was an American world champion bridge player and administrator from Canoga Park, California. Mathe, a native of New York, served in the Army during World War II; he enlisted two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He died in Los Angeles in 1986. Mathé Altéry (, born Marie-Thérèse Renée Micheline Altare, 12 September 1927) is a French soprano prominent in the 1950s and 1960s. Mathé Altéry is the daughter of French tenor Mario Altéry. In 1956, both Altéry and Dany Dauberson individually represented France in the first Eurovision Song Contest. Career Altéry was born in Paris. She began her singing career in Cherbourg-Octeville, Manche, Normandy, where her father was working at the time. She studied classical music. Altéry began as a chorister at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, in the operetta ''Annie du Far-West (Annie of the Wild West)'' and in ''La Toison d'Or''.
