Mathematics education in the United Kingdom is largely carried out at ages 5–16 at primary school and secondary school (though basic numeracy is taught at an earlier age). However voluntary Mathematics education in the UK takes place from 16 to 18, in sixth forms and other forms of further education. Whilst adults can study the subject at universities and higher education more widely. Elizabeth Williams (educationist)
Elizabeth Williams (née Larby, formerly Emily May; 29 January 1895 – 29 March 1986) was a British mathematician and educationist. Life Williams was born on 29 January 1895 in Pimlico, London. She studied in Chelsea and Forest Gate during her childhood, and at the age of 16 began attending Bedford College, University of London for a college degree. At Bedford, one of her mentors was Alfred North Whitehead. She became a grammar school teacher, but had to stop teaching when she became married in 1922. Because of this situation, she founded her own school in North London with her husband, and then in 1930 (with the assistance of Percy Nunn, who had been a former tutor) she took a position in education at King's College London. Hilary Shuard
Hilary Bertha Shuard CBE (14 November 192824 December 1992) was an expert on the teaching of mathematics in primary schools. She was a member of the Cockcroft Committee, and Deputy Principal of Homerton College, Cambridge for twenty years. Life Shuard was born in Chester on 14 November 1928. She was educated in mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, and also gained blues in hockey and cricket at Cambridge. Between 1953 and 1959, she taught at Christ's Hospital Hertford before joining the staff of the mathematics department at Homerton College Cambridge, where she remained until 1986. She was Deputy Principal of the college from 1966 until her retirement. Wilfred Cockcroft
Sir Wilfred Halliday Cockcroft (7 June 1923 – 27 September 1999) was an eminent mathematics educator from the University of Hull. Early life He attended Keighley Boys' Grammar School, now called Beckfoot Oakbank, and studied Mathematics at Balliol College, Oxford. During WWII he worked in radar. Career Mathematics report In 1978 he was commissioned by the then Labour government to chair a comprehensive inquiry into the teaching of mathematics in primary and secondary schools in England and Wales. The committee of inquiry produced its report in 1982, published as ''Mathematics Counts'' but widely known as "the Cockcroft report". The William Tyndale affair was a controversy in British education arising from the introduction in 1974–75 of radically progressive methods at the William Tyndale Junior School in the London Borough of Islington. The United Kingdom, through voluntary and mandated laws, has metricated most of government, industry, commerce, and scientific research to the metric system; however, the previous measurement system (Imperial units) is still used in society. Decimal Day () in the United Kingdom and in Republic of Ireland, Ireland was Monday 15 February 1971, the day on which each country decimalised its respective £sd currency of pound sterling, pounds, Shilling (British coin), shillings, and penny, pence. Before this date, both the British pound sterling and the Irish pound (symbol "£") were subdivided into 20 shillings, each of 12 (old) pence, a total of 240 pence. The Nuffield Science Teaching Project was a programme to develop a better approach to teaching science in BritishStrictly speaking, the Nuffield programme only applied to England and Wales; schools in Northern Ireland and Scotland were administered separately.
