Mathai Nooranal
Rev. Fr. Mathai Nooranal (1928–2002) was a priest of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. He was a social worker and a philanthropist. Nooranal served as vicar of the St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral, Sulthan Bathery, Kerala from 1951 until his death in 2002. He was instrumental in setting up the St. Mary's College in Sulthan Bathery, the first college in Wayanad district. He was the president of Sulthan Bathery Co-Operative Bank for more than thirty years. Nooranal died on 29 November 2002 at Sulthan Bathery. He contested for Kerala State Legislative Assembly from Sulthan Bathery (State Assembly constituency) as an Independent candidate on behalf of the CPI(M) in the 2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly election and lost against Indian National Congress candidate N. D. Appachan. Sulthan Bathery
Sultan Bathery is a town and municipality in Wayanad district of Kerala, India, near the borders with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka states. The largest town in Wayanad district, it is the headquarters of Sultan Bathery taluk. The place came to be known by the name Sultan Bathery after the Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan invaded the region and used the Jain Temple located here as a battery. Location Sulthan Bathery lies on the Kozhikode–Kollegal National Highway ( NH 766) 97 km from Kozhikode. It is 114 kilometers from Mysore and about 100 kilometers from Ooty (Udagamandalam). It is also connected with Nilambur. The people primarily depend on agriculture for a living. Sulthan Bathery is situated at about 930 metres above mean sea level. Wayanad District
Wayanad () is a district in the north-east of Indian state Kerala with administrative headquarters at the municipality of Kalpetta. It is the only plateau in Kerala. The Wayanad Plateau forms a continuation of the Mysore Plateau, the southern portion of Deccan Plateau. It is set high in the Western Ghats with altitudes ranging from 700 to 2100 meters. Vellari Mala, a high peak situated on the trijunction of Wayanad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts, is the highest point in Wayanad district. The 2001 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was held on 10 May 2001 to elect members to the Kerala State Assembly. Polls were held simultaneously in all 140 seats and resulted in a voter turnout of 72.47%.
