Matai (Maucatar)
Matai is a village ( suco) located on northeast of Suai in East Timor. It is part of Maucatar Subdistrict, Cova Lima District. Geography and politics Matai has four sub-villages ( Aldeias): Maior/ Cunain (''Kunain''), Quiar (''Kiar''), Matai (former ''Cruz Mina Rai''), and Lohorai. Culture Bunak and Tetum Terik are the main language in Matai. Matai is a well known in Suai for its 'Tua Moruk', a kind of local alcohol made out of palm or palm wine; according to the people of Suai it is the best palm wine in Cova Lima. Matai has one main Football Club called ' Hasuma' (Halibur Suco Matai). History In 1999 the two pro-Independence Marshal Amaral Cortereal, together with Mr. Felisberto, were captured in Matai and taken away by the Militia group( LAKSAUR) and murdered in Salele village. Salele
Salele is a village in East Timor located in the suco of Lalawa in the Tilomar Administrative Post (formerly called subdistrict) of the Cova Lima Municipality. It is the location of the second main border crossing between the East Timor and Indonesia. The checkpoint on the Indonesian side of the border is called the Motamasin checkpoint. Geography Salele is located on the southern coastline of Timor island, at the southwesternmost corner of East Timor. It is located just east of the Mota Masin River which forms the East Timor-Indonesia border. Transportation The village is served by the main road linking Suai, 25 km to the east, with the town of Betun, the capital of Malaka Regency which is located 30 km to the west across the border in Indonesia. Palm Wine
Palm wine, known by several local names, is an alcoholic beverage created from the sap of various species of palm tree such as the palmyra, date palms, and coconut palms. It is known by various names in different regions and is common in various parts of Africa, the Caribbean, South America, South Asia, Southeast Asia and Micronesia. Palm wine production by smallholders and individual farmers may promote conservation as palm trees become a source of regular household income that may economically be worth more than the value of timber sold. Tapping The sap is extracted and collected by a tapper. Typically the sap is collected from the cut flower of the palm tree. A container is fastened to the flower stump to collect the sap.
