Matagorda County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 36,255. Its county seat is Bay City, not to be confused with the larger Baytown in Harris and Chambers Counties. Matagorda County is named for the canebrakes that once grew along the coast (''matagorda'' is a Spanish word meaning "thick bush"). Matagorda County comprises the Bay City, TX micropolitan statistical area, which is also included in the Houston- The Woodlands, TX combined statistical area. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which (32%) are covered by water. The water area includes Matagorda Bay. It borders the Gulf of Mexico. San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge
The San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife conservation area along the coast of Texas (USA), south of the towns of Sweeny and Brazoria, Texas. It encloses a bay behind a barrier island at the Gulf of Mexico. The refuge is located in southern Brazoria and eastern Matagorda counties. San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1969 and provides quality habitat for wintering migratory waterfowl and other bird life. Viewing the rippling marshes and ponds of the refuge gives an image of Texas as it was before settlement. State Highway 111 (SH 111) is a state highway that runs from Gonzales to Midfield in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Texas. Route description SH 111 begins at a junction with U.S. Route 183 (US 183) in the unincorporated community of Hochheim. Officially, the route extends northwest with US 183 to Gonzales, but that portion is not currently measured or mapped as part of the route and is not signed as such. The route travels east to Yoakum, crossing US 90 Alt., before traveling into downtown Yoakum. The route then turns southeast toward a junction with Future I-69/ US 59 at Edna. State Highway 71 (SH 71) is a Texas state highway that runs . The western terminus is at US 87 and US 377 south of Brady and its eastern terminus is at SH 35 near Blessing. This highway is designated the "10th Mountain Division Highway" from SH 95 to Interstate 35. History SH 71 was originally designated on August 21, 1923 from Austin to Columbus, replacing SH 3D and the western half of SH 3A. On June 8, 1925, SH 71 was extended to Midfield, though this was not effective until 1926. On March 19, 1928, it was extended south to its current end. On June 21, 1938, SH 71 Spur was designated in Columbus.
