Borj El Amri Airport is a small airport near Borj El Amri, a city in the Manouba Governorate of Tunisia. The airport is located southwest of Tunis and has a functional asphalt runway. The airport is used as a training site of the ''Aviation School of Borj El Amri'' belonging to the Tunesian Ministry of Defense. Units in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO) were the second-largest user of the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II. There were a total of six combat groups (twenty-four squadrons) equipped with the bomber assigned to the Theater. Overview Initially equipped with the B-17F Flying Fortress, the 97th and 301st Bombardment Groups were flown from airfields in England to Algiers and Oran, Algeria in November 1942 after the Operation Torch landings. They were assigned to the 5th Bombardment Wing, XII Bomber Command, Twelfth Air Force. These initial two groups were joined in February 1943 by the 99th and in April 1943 by the 2d Bombardment Group, which arrived from the United States. The Martin B-26 Marauder is an American twin-engined medium bomber that saw extensive service during World War II. The B-26 was built at two locations: Baltimore, Maryland, and Omaha, Nebraska, by the Glenn L. Martin Company. First used in the Pacific Theater of World War II in early 1942, it was also used in the Mediterranean Theater and in Western Europe. After entering service with the United States Army aviation units, the aircraft quickly received the reputation of a " widowmaker" due to the early models' high accident rate during takeoffs and landings. This was because the Marauder had to be flown at precise airspeeds, particularly on final runway approach or when one engine was out. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Borj El Amri or Bordj El Amri ( ar, برج العامري) is a town in the Manouba Governorate of Tunisia. It is located southwest of Tunis. The town of Borj El Amri municipality contains 6,458 inhabitants and is the main town (''chef-lieu'') of the Borj El Amri delegation which has 18,977 inhabitants. It was created by a decree of the Bey of Tunis in 1904. At that time it was known as Massicault in honor of Justin Massicault, the Resident General of France in Tunisia from 1886 to 1892. It was renamed in 1961, it takes the name of Borj El Amri in connection with an ancient fortress (''borj'').
