"(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts" is a song by the Bee Gees, written by Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb and released in 1967. Robin Gibb sang lead vocals on this song and it would become one of his staple songs to perform during both Bee Gees concerts and his solo appearances. It later appeared on their 1968 album, '' Horizontal''. The song became the first of the group's five No. 1 hits on the UK Singles Chart, reached No. 1 in 12 other countries, peaked at No. 11 on the US ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and eventually sold over five million copies worldwide. When the brothers wrote the song, they had never been to Massachusetts. The Bee Gees were a musical group formed in 1958 by brothers Barry Gibb, Barry, Robin Gibb, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. "World" is a song by the Bee Gees, released in 1967 as a single in the United Kingdom and Europe and then included on their album '' Horizontal'' the following year. Though it was a big hit in Europe, Atco Records did not issue it as a single in the United States, having just issued a third single from '' Bee Gees' 1st'', "Holiday". Recording and composition The song's first recording session was on 3 October 1967 along with "With the Sun in My Eyes" and " Words". The song's last recording session was on 28 October 1967. "World" was originally planned as having no orchestra, so was recorded on four tracks, including some piano played by Maurice and organ played by Robin. When it was decided to add an orchestra, the four tracks containing the band were mixed to one track and the orchestra was added to the other track. "Let's Go to San Francisco" is the only UK-charting single by the British pop group The Flower Pot Men. The song was written and produced by John Carter and Ken Lewis, engineered by John Mackswith and released in 1967 on 7" single format. Carter also sang the lead vocal in the recording. It is regarded as a work of the 1960s California Sound. Reception The song was a Top 10 hit single in a number of countries. It peaked at No. 12 in New Zealand, No. 9 in Norway, No. 8 in Ireland and No. 4 in the United Kingdom. Carter was joined in harmonies by Tony Burrows; both were part of The First Class' single " Beach Baby", which quotes the melody of "Let's Go To San Francisco" at the end. Flower power was a slogan used during the late 1960s and early 1970s as a symbol of passive resistance and nonviolence.
