Mascoutah
Mascoutah is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States, named for the Mascoutens, a tribe of the Michigan Indians. The population was 7,483 at the 2010 census. According to the US Census Bureau, the population was estimated at 7,994 in 2019. History The town of Mascoutah was originally established in 1837 as Mechanicsburg. This was disputed with the establishment of a Post Office; the inhabitants were informed that another township in Illinois was already named Mechanicsburg. The town was renamed after the Mascouten tribe, and was officially designated Mascoutah in 1839. Mascoutah was considered a progressive town near the turn of the 20th century. The town saw steady growth thanks to the construction of a train depot in 1870, courtesy of the Southern Railway Company. Benno Lischer
Benno Edward Lischer (June 27, 1876 – October 9, 1959) was an American orthodontist who at one point was the president of American Association of Dental Schools and American Association of Orthodontists. He was the first full-time dean at Washington University School of Dental Medicine. Life He was born in Mascoutah, Illinois to Christopher Lischer and Caroline Freund. He attended elementary and high school in Mascoutah. He graduated from Washington University's dental program in April 1900 and received his dental degree there. He was married to Mary E. Lischer. After graduation, he served on the Washington University faculty from 1900 to 1924 teaching Operative Technique and Dental Anatomy. In addition he also taught as a professor at the Department of Orthodontics at University of Michigan School of Dentistry and at University of California, San Francisco. Mascouten
The Mascouten (also ''Mascoutin'', ''Mathkoutench'', ''Muscoden,'' or ''Musketoon'') were a tribe of Algonquian-speaking Native Americans located in the Midwest. They are believed to have dwelt on both sides of the Mississippi River, adjacent to the present-day Wisconsin-Illinois border, after being driven out of Michigan by the Odawa. The accounts of the ''Jesuit Relations'' frequently refer to the Mascouten as the "Fire Nation" or "Nation of Fire". One Jesuit writes: "The Fire Nation is erroneously so called, its correct name being ''Maskoutench'', which means "a treeless country," like that inhabited by these people; but as, by changing a few letters, this Word is made to signify "fire," therefore the people have come to be called the Fire Nation." Scott Air Force Base
Scott Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in St. Clair County, Illinois, near Belleville and O'Fallon, east-southeast of downtown St. Louis. Scott Field was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the United States entered World War I in April 1917. It is headquarters of Air Mobility Command (AMC), and is also the headquarters of the U.S. Transportation Command, a Unified Combatant Command that coordinates transportation across all the services.
