Masaka Sports Stadium
The Masaka Sports Stadium, also Masaka Recreation Ground, is a planned multi-purpose stadium in Uganda. It is intended to be used for soccer matches and athletic completions. In addition, facilities for volleyball and basketball will be constructed. A swimming pool is planned to be erected at the site. Location The stadium is located in the city of Masaka, in Masaka District, in the Buganda Region of Uganda. The stadium sits on a piece of real estate in the city centre referred to as the Masaka Recreation Grounds. The geographical coordinates of the stadium are:0°20'41.0"S 31°44'08.0"E (Latitude:-0.344722; Longitude:31.735556). Overview The real estate on which the stadium sits was donated by King Muteesa II of Buganda in 1955. The site is under the supervision and management of Masaka City Council. Masaka
Masaka is a city in the Central Region, Uganda, Buganda Region in Uganda, west of Lake Victoria. The city is the headquarters of Masaka District. Location Masaka is approximately to the south-west of Kampala on the highway to Mbarara. The city is close to the Equator. The coordinates of Masaka are 0°20'28.0"S, 31°44'10.0"E (Latitude:-0.341111; Longitude:31.736111). Masaka lies at an average elevation of above sea level. History Masaka was founded as a township in 1953. It became a town council in 1958 and a municipality in 1968. Masaka was a strategically important location during the Uganda–Tanzania War (1978–79), and was accordingly garrisoned by Uganda Army (1971–1980), Uganda Army troops. These soldiers terrorized the local civilians, prompting most to flee the town. Muteesa II Of Buganda
Sir Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Mutesa II (19 November 1924 – 21 November 1969) was a Ugandan royal and statesman who served as the first president of Uganda from 1962 to 1966, when he was overthrown by Milton Obote. Mutesa was also the Kabaka of Buganda, Kabaka (king) of the Non-sovereign monarchy, traditional kingdom of Buganda in Uganda from 22 November 1939 until his death in 1969. He was often referred as King Freddie by the foreign press, a name rarely used in Uganda. An ardent defender of Buganda's interests, especially its traditional autonomy, he often threatened to make the kingdom independent both before and after Uganda's independence to preserve it.
