María Bibiana Uribe
María Bibiana Uribe Amaro (San Miguel Tenango, Huauchinango, Puebla, 1905 - November 23, 1999) was an Indigenous Mexican woman who gained national fame after winning Mexico's India Bonita beauty pageant in 1921. Born near Necaxa, Puebla, Uribe was sixteen when she won the contest. The India Bonita beauty pageant was founded in January 1921, when , the founder of '' El Universal'', decided to celebrate the Mexican Centennial by hosting a contest to "bring greater attention and sympathy toward Indians as part of Mexico." The judges of the contest were Jorge Enciso (a pro-Native Mexican artist), Manuel Gamio (the Mexican anthropologist), and Rafael Pérez Taylor (the future head of Mexico's Federal Department of Fine Arts). Necaxa River
The Necaxa River (''Río Necaxa'') is one of the main rivers of the Mexican state of Puebla. It is a tributary of the Tecolutla River. Beginning south of Huauchinango with the name Totolapa, it runs through tall mountains and deep canyons of the Sierra Madre Oriental, forming the waterfalls known as Salto Chico y Salto Grande. Its flow is also used to generate hydroelectric power. Manuel Gamio (1883–1960) was a Mexican anthropologist, archaeologist, sociologist, and a leader of the '' indigenismo'' movement. Although he rejected full sovereignty for indigenous communities in Mexico, he argued that their self-governing organizations, such as tribal governments, municipal organizations, and elected community leaders should be recognized and respected. He also contributed to the Mexican immigrant laborers in the United States to organize and create Mexican communities in the United States. He is often considered as the father of modern anthropological studies in Mexico. He devised a well-known system for classifying the hunter-gatherers of Central America. The Porfiriato or Porfirismo (, ), coined by Mexican historian Daniel Cosío Villegas, is a term given to the period when General Porfirio Díaz ruled Mexico under an Authoritarianism, authoritarian military dictatorship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Seizing power in Plan of Tuxtepec, a coup in 1876, Díaz pursued a policy of "order and progress," inviting foreign investment in Mexico and maintaining social and political order, by force if necessary. There were significant economic, technological, social, and cultural changes during this period. As Díaz approached his 80th birthday in 1910, having been continuously elected since 1884, he still had not put in place a plan for his succession. Álvaro Obregón
Álvaro Obregón Salido (; 19 February 1880 – 17 July 1928) was a Mexican general, inventor and politician who served as the 46th President of Mexico from 1920 to 1924. Obregón was re-elected to the presidency in 1928 but was assassinated before he could take office. Born in Navojoa, Sonora, Obregón joined the Revolution after the Ten Tragic Days, February 1913 coup d'état that brought General Victoriano Huerta to the presidency. Obregón supported Sonora's decision to follow Governor Venustiano Carranza as leader of the northern revolutionary coalition, the Constitutional Army, Constitutionalist Army, against the Huerta regime.
