Mary Pix
Mary Pix (1666 – 17 May 1709) was an English novelist and playwright. As an admirer of Aphra Behn and colleague of Susanna Centlivre, Pix has been called "a link between women writers of the Stuart Restoration, Restoration and Augustan literature, Augustan periods". Early years Mary Griffith Pix was born in 1666, the daughter of a rector, musician and Headmaster of the Royal Latin School, Buckingham, Buckinghamshire; her father, Roger Griffith, died when she was very young, but Mary and her mother continued to live in the schoolhouse after his death. She was courted by her father's successor Thomas Dalby, but he left with the outbreak of smallpox in town, one year after a fire that burned the schoolhouse. Acts Of Union 1707
The Acts of Union refer to two acts of Parliament, one by the Parliament of Scotland in March 1707, followed shortly thereafter by an equivalent act of the Parliament of England. They put into effect the international Treaty of Union agreed on 22 July 1706, which politically joined the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland into a single "political state" named Kingdom of Great Britain, Great Britain, with Anne, Queen of Great Britain, Queen Anne as its sovereign. The English and Scottish acts of ratification took effect on 1 May 1707, creating the new kingdom, with Parliament of Great Britain, its parliament based in the Palace of Westminster. ''The Conquest of Spain'' is a 1705 tragedy by the English writer Mary Pix. The play was published anonymously, but has been widely attributed to Pix. It was a reworking of the Jacobean tragedy '' All's Lost by Lust'' by William Rowley. ''The Double Distress: A Tragedy'' is a 1701 play by the English writer Mary Pix. Despite its title, it is a comedy. Plot The play takes place amidst conflict between the Persians and the Medes. Leamira is the daughter of the Persian king, Darius. Her father commands her to marry Tygranes (Prince of the Medes), but she loves the Persian general Cleomedon. At the end of the play, it is revealed that Cleomedon is actually the son of Astiages, King of the Medes. Leamira and Cleomedon are therefore free to marry. ''Queen Catherine; or, the Ruines of Love'', is a historical tragedy written by Mary Pix, first performed in 1698. A historical adaptation of the Wars of the Roses, it fictionalises Edward IV’s supposed plot for revenge against Catherine of Valois (the widow of the late Henry V) and her second husband Owen Tudor. The play's epilogue was written by Catharine Trotter Cockburn. Summary Act 1 Edward IV speaks to his council about their impending battle with Queen Catherine's army. Pix's unpublished manuscript was rejected by the actor and producer George Powell, who subsequently plagiarized it in his play ''Imposture Defeated'' (1697). ''The Innocent Mistress'' is a comedy written by Mary Pix, first performed in 1697. Plot Sir Charles, a younger son with no estate, is unhappily married to the wealthier, older and "ill-bred" Lady Beauclair. Lady Beauclair is supposedly a widow, and like her daughter Peggy, is “an ill-bred woman”. Their marriage has not been consummated. He instead falls in love with his niece's friend 'Bellinda', whose real name is in fact Marianne. She is in hiding after escaping a forced marriage, and although she loves Sir Charles, she refuses to become his mistress. At the end of the play it is revealed that Lady Beauclair's first husband, Mr Flywife, is alive and back to London after several years in Jamaica. Sir Charles' marriage to Lady Beauclair is legally invalid, so he and 'Bellinda' are free to marry.
