Mary Louisa Armitt (31 July 1851 – 24 September 1911) was an English polymath. She was a teacher, writer, ornithologist and philanthropist. She was the funder and founder of the Armitt Library, Ambleside. Life Armitt was born in Salford, Lancashire in 1851. She was one of three gifted daughters who were born to William and Mary Ann Armitt (née Whalley). Mary Louisa Willard (May 19, 1898 – April 17, 1993) was internationally recognized for her work in microscopy and forensic science. She began working at Pennsylvania State University as an assistant in 1921, and retired as professor emerita in 1964. She assisted law enforcement officers throughout her career and after her formal retirement, often without pay. Education and career Mary Louisa Willard was born May 19, 1898, at Moffat Cottage on the Penn State campus, to Joseph Moody Willard and Henrietta Nunn. Mary Louisa White (2 September 1866 – January 1935) was a British composer, pianist, and educator who invented a Letterless Method of musical notation. Her parents were Robert and Louisa Makin White. Mary Louisa, known to her family as "Louie," was the oldest of their four children. She also had a half brother and a half sister from her father's first marriage. White studied music with John Farmer in London, and gave frequent concerts in London and Paris, including at the Steinway Hall in London. She taught piano at Kensington High School at the turn of the 20th century, and worked at the Girls' Day School Trust with her sisters Jessie and Winnie from 1902 to 1903. At the time, Kensington High School was administered by the Girls' Day School Trust. White invented the "Letterless Method" of teaching music to beginners. Mary Louisa Bruce, Countess of Elgin and Kincardine (; 8 May 1819 – 9 March 1898) was a British writer. She was vicereine of India in 1862-1863. She was the daughter of John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham and his second wife Louisa Elizabeth Lambton (née Grey), daughter of Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. She travelled to Canada twice: the first time when her father went to Canada to investigate the Lower Canada Rebellion in 29 May – 1 November 1838. She later returned to Canada with her husband, James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, from 1847 to 1853. An accomplished artist, she studied under John Richard Coke-Smyth, alongside her sister, Lady Emily Augusta, and travel companion, Katherine Ellice. She wrote and illustrated journals and diaries of her international travels. Mary Louisa Whately (August 31, 1824 – March 9, 1889) was an English missionary and author in Egypt. She spent over 30 years building schools for both girls and boys, ministering to their families and writing books based on her experiences. Whately was the first to build educational facilities for the lower classes in Cairo, especially Muslim women, and started schooling for all, rather than only for those who could pay for it. Family Mary Louisa Whately was born on August 31, 1824, at Halesworth in Suffolk, England, as the third child (second daughter) born to Richard Whately and Elizabeth Pope. Her older sister was the religious writer Jane Whately. Her father was a rector in Suffolk when Mary Louisa Whately was born, but appointed Principal of Alban Hall in Oxford in 1827, and then Archbishop of Dublin in 1831, so that the family moved to Ireland, where Mary Louisa Whately remained until she went to Egypt.
